Welcome to Zora’s Domain, friend. Pour yourself something warm, because Divine Beast Vah Ruta is one of the most heartfelt quests in Breath of the Wild. There’s no wrong way to approach this, and you can take it at your own pace.
This walkthrough covers the whole journey: the Zora Armor, the 20 Shock Arrows on Ploymus Mountain, boarding the Divine Beast, the five terminals and Waterblight Ganon, plus the optional Zora Helm detour I always recommend.

Where the Vah Ruta Quest Begins
The quest starts in Zora’s Domain once you finish the Reach Zora’s Domain main quest. King Dorephan explains what Vah Ruta’s endless rain is doing to the region and what happened to his daughter Mipha 100 years ago. This is one of those moments worth slowing down for.
Here’s your checklist:
- Quest giver: King Dorephan in the throne room.
- Key item: the Zora Armor, which lets you swim faster and swim up waterfalls.
- Main goal: collect 20 Shock Arrows and use them on Vah Ruta.
- Key characters: Muzu, the doubtful elder, and Prince Sidon, your cheerful partner.
- Where to go: Ploymus Mountain, home of a Lynel.
New to the Domain? Our Zora’s Domain guide covers the shops, the inn and everything around town.
Step by Step: Zora Armor to Shock Arrows
- Talk to King Dorephan. He gives you the Zora Armor. Put it on right away.
- Meet Muzu. Head down into the Domain, where Muzu and Sidon are arguing. Seeing you in the armor, which Mipha made, finally convinces him to help.
- Learn the plan. Muzu tells you the Shock Arrows you need can be found on Ploymus Mountain, where a Lynel lives. Sidon will wait for you at East Reservoir Lake.
- Head up Ploymus Mountain. The Zora Armor lets you swim up waterfalls, which gives you some handy shortcuts toward the mountain.
- Grab the arrows. At the top a cutscene introduces the Lynel. Shock Arrows are scattered around the summit, stuck in the ground and the rocks.
- Collect all 20. Then head for East Reservoir Lake.
Take Your Time: you don’t have to fight the Lynel. Sneak, pick up arrows and keep your distance. If you’re itching for the fight anyway, you can find its exact spot on Ploymus Mountain on our Breath of the Wild interactive map.
Optional Detour: The Zora Helm
Don’t skip this one. A worn stone inscription in the Domain hints that the Zora Helm was placed in the ruins at Toto Lake, northwest of the Domain. Swim up the waterfall to get there, then use Magnesis to pull up the submerged metal chest in the ruins.
- Where: the flooded ruins at Toto Lake.
- How: Magnesis on the metal chest underwater.
- Reward: the Zora Helm, the second piece of the Zora set.
Completionists, you’ll want to know: the third piece, the Zora Greaves, comes from Laflat’s side quest Lynel Safari: photograph the Lynel on Ploymus Mountain and show her the picture.
Boarding Vah Ruta
Meet Sidon at East Reservoir Lake and hop on. He speeds you around the lake and launches you up into the air, and you get a slow motion moment to aim each shot.
- Shoot the glowing orbs. Hit the pink orbs on Vah Ruta with Shock Arrows. Sidon calls out each opportunity.
- Deal with the ice blocks. Vah Ruta launches ice blocks at you. Cryonis breaks them before they hit.
- Enter the beast. Once every orb is down, Vah Ruta calms, the rain stops and Sidon gets you to the entrance.
Inside the Divine Beast: Five Terminals
Inside, Mipha’s voice guides you. The whole dungeon is about water: you change the angle of Vah Ruta’s trunk from the map to redirect the stream, turn water wheels and clear Malice so you can reach five terminals.
| Step | What to do | Done? |
|---|---|---|
| Guidance Stone | Activate it to get the dungeon map and the trunk controls | Map |
| Terminals 1 to 3 | Use the trunk’s water to spin wheels and open the way | 3 of 5 |
| Terminal 4 | On top of the beast, behind flames. Use the trunk’s water to put the fire out | 4 of 5 |
| Terminal 5 | On the trunk itself, reached when the trunk is raised | 5 of 5 |
| Treasure chests | Several chests sit around the beast, one on a water wheel and one on the trunk | Check every room |
| Main control unit | Opens once all five terminals are active | Boss |
Easily missable, so heads up: chests here hide on moving parts and under Malice, so look around every room before you activate the next terminal.

Boss Fight: Waterblight Ganon
Waterblight Ganon guards the main control unit. It’s very beatable with a bow and some patience.
- Phase 1: he fights with a spear on dry ground. Shoot his eye to stun him, then move in and attack.
- Phase 2: the room floods and he throws ice blocks. Break them with Cryonis and use Cryonis pillars to stay out of the water.
- Eat first: bring plenty of healing food. Our Breath of the Wild recipe guide has easy dishes.
Rewards
- Heart Container: from Waterblight Ganon.
- Mipha’s Grace: revives you with extra hearts when you fall in battle, then recharges.
- Lightscale Trident: Mipha’s weapon, from a chest in the throne room after King Dorephan thanks you. If it breaks, Dento in the Domain can make you a new one.
- Story progress: one Divine Beast freed, and a Domain that finally sees the sun.
Lore Connection: the Lightscale Trident ties directly to Mipha’s memory, and the Zora talk about her all over town. Want the bigger picture? Our Vah Ruta overview covers the beast itself, and the Breath of the Wild interactive map helps you find Toto Lake and the stone monuments.
Vah Ruta FAQ
How many Shock Arrows do you need for Vah Ruta?
The quest asks for 20, collected on Ploymus Mountain. You’ll want a few spares in case you miss.
Do you have to fight the Lynel on Ploymus Mountain?
No. You can sneak around the summit and collect the Shock Arrows without fighting it.
Where is the Zora Helm?
In a submerged metal chest in the ruins at Toto Lake. Use Magnesis to pull it out.
What does Mipha’s Grace do?
It revives Link with extra hearts when he would die, then needs time to recharge.
How many terminals are in Vah Ruta?
Five. Activate all of them to open the main control unit and fight Waterblight Ganon.
One more thing before you move on: stop by the throne room, talk to everyone and let the Zora thank you properly. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and this is one of the sweetest finish lines in the game.
