Master Sword and Hylian Shield

Reach Korok Forest

Follow the fog through the Lost Woods in the center of Hyrule. Torch flames blowing in the wind show the safe path.

Have 13 hearts

Pulling the Master Sword drains your hearts. You need 13 permanent heart containers; yellow hearts from food don't count, but the Horned Statue in Hateno can swap stamina for hearts.

Let it recharge

When the Master Sword runs out of energy it needs about ten minutes to recharge, but it never breaks for good.

Wake it up near evil

Near Ganon's forces, such as in Hyrule Castle, the Master Sword glows and deals double damage.

Get the Hylian Shield

Beat the Stalnox in the lockup beneath Hyrule Castle to win the strongest shield in the game.

Rebuy what breaks

Lost the Hylian Shield or a Champion weapon? Most can be bought or rebuilt later.

Weapon tips

Throw what's about to break

A weapon on its last hit deals extra damage when thrown.

Farm Lynels for top weapons

Savage Lynel weapons are among the strongest. Lynels respawn after a Blood Moon.

Save Ancient Arrows

One Ancient Arrow destroys a Guardian outright. Keep a few for emergencies.

Upgrade your pouches

Hestu trades Korok Seeds for more weapon, bow and shield slots.

Parry Guardian lasers

A well-timed shield guard bounces a Guardian's laser back for massive damage.

Don't hoard

Weapons are everywhere. Using your good ones is better than dying with a full inventory.
