Link shield surfing down a snowy mountain slope in Breath of the Wild

Hebra is the frozen far northwest of Breath of the Wild: a huge stretch of snowfields and peaks above Rito Village where the cold hurts, blizzards eat your visibility and the shrines are spread out across the mountains. It’s also home to shield surfing, snowball bowling and a hidden hot spring, so it’s not all suffering.

This is one of those moments worth slowing down for. Here’s your checklist for getting in, staying warm, climbing the tower and tracking down all 13 shrines.

Hebra region quick facts.

Before You Go: Beating the Cold

Hebra is below freezing almost everywhere, and the cold chips away your hearts. Sort this out before you climb.

  • Warm Clothes: the Warm Doublet from Hateno Village or the Snowquill set from Rito Village give you cold resistance.
  • Spicy Food: anything cooked with Spicy Peppers or Warm Safflina gives a cold resistance buff (think Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry).
  • Fire Weapons: holding a Flameblade or a Fire Rod keeps you warm and melts ice.
  • Firewood and Flint: light a campfire to wait out a blizzard. Time passes faster sitting by it.

How to Climb Hebra Tower

Hebra Tower is unusually short, but it’s surrounded by ice crystals that block the climb.

  1. Best option: use Revali’s Gale near the base to launch straight over the ice and glide onto the tower.
  2. No Gale? Melt the ice. Shoot it with Fire Arrows, swing a fire weapon at it, or pile wood next to it and light it with flint.
  3. Activate the terminal at the top to reveal the region map.

The Hebra Tower page marks the exact spot. Starting from Rito Village is your best bet: head north and the tower is a short trip away.

Trial on the Cliff

Easily missable, so heads up: this shrine quest takes place in the North Lomei Labyrinth, far to the northeast of the region. Make your way through the maze to reveal Qaza Tokki Shrine. Pack extra warm food, it’s a long trip.

The Bird in the Mountain

This shrine quest points you to a mountain shaped like a bird, and solving it reveals Mozo Shenno Shrine. Take it at your own pace, the view on the way is worth it.

Suggested Route Through Hebra

  1. Rito Village: stock up on Snowquill gear and spicy ingredients, and rest up.
  2. Hebra Tower: climb it first so the map fills in and you can plan the rest.
  3. Snowfield Stable: register it as your base for the eastern side and pick up the stable quest.
  4. Central peaks: work through the shrines around Hebra Peak, including Goma Asaagh behind the ice blocks.
  5. Far northeast: save Trial on the Cliff and the North Lomei Labyrinth for when you’re well stocked.

One more thing before you move on: blizzards roll in fast up here. If visibility drops to nothing, don’t push on blind. Light a fire, wait it out, and you’ll avoid walking off a cliff.

Fun Detours and Landmarks

  • Selmie’s Spot: a shield surfing course run by Selmie, a former pro. Grab a shield and race down the slope.
  • Pondo’s Lodge: snowball bowling with Pondo. Silly, and surprisingly hard to get a strike.
  • Snowfield Stable: your rest stop and supply run. Juannelle here starts the side quest Stalhorse: Pictured!
  • Hebra Great Skeleton: a giant skeleton half buried in the snow, worth a detour for the view.
  • Sherfin’s Secret Hot Spring: a hidden hot spring that’s a nice break from the cold.

Stables like Snowfield Stable are your warm base in the north.

This random detail actually connects to the bigger picture: Hebra sits right above Rito Village, and the Rito Champion Revali’s Gale is what makes travel up here so much easier. Do Divine Beast Vah Medoh before a serious Hebra trip and you’ll thank yourself. Korok hunters, the Hebra Peak Korok page and the BOTW interactive map help you track seeds and shrines.

Vincenzo Antoniani has spent more hours exploring hostile alien biomes than most people spend commuting to work. Whether he's diving for Managed Democracy in Helldivers 2, scavenging the dunes of Arrakis in Dune: Awakening, or getting chased by something with too many teeth in Subnautica 2, Vincenzo brings a survivor's eye for detail to everything he writes. He's also a longtime World of Warcraft raider who somehow still finds time to explore every new planet, ocean, and desert gaming throws at him. When he's not narrowly escaping death in a procedurally generated nightmare, Vincenzo is digging through patch notes, testing builds, and figuring out the fastest way to not die so you don't have to learn the hard way. Expect guides that are equal parts practical and slightly haunted by whatever killed him last.
