Mayak Shrine is a timing test. The trial is called Timely Catches, and it asks you to roll a boulder down a chute, then hit a switch at exactly the right moment so a moving platform slides out and catches it. Easy to understand, surprisingly easy to mess up.

Here’s how to find the shrine in the Eldin region, nail both catches, and grab the hanging chest with the Large Zonai Charge inside.

Mayak Shrine Location

Mayak Shrine sits on the Surface in the Eldin region, out in the rocky badlands northwest of Death Mountain.

  • Region: Eldin (Surface), on the East Deplian Badlands northwest of Death Mountain, near the tail of the Eldin Great Skeleton.
  • Coordinates: about 1271, 3734, 0106.
  • Trial name: Timely Catches.
  • Abilities used: Ultrahand, your paraglider and a bow.
  • Treasure: one hanging chest (Large Zonai Charge) and the Light of Blessing.

Getting There

Your best bet is the Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower. Launch from it and glide northeast toward the shrine’s glow. Set a map pin before you jump (Pro tip: the badlands look very samey from the air, and a pin keeps you on course).

What to Bring

  • Arrows: you need at least one to cut the chest down. A Keese Eyeball fused to an arrow makes the shot much easier.
  • A fast weapon: a quick swing makes the switch timing more forgiving than a slow two hander.
  • Stamina: there’s a bit of gliding (think Stamella Shrooms or Endura Carrots if your wheel is short).

How the Puzzle Works

Each room has a glowing yellow post. Strike it and a platform with a target on it slides out from under the floor for a moment. Your job is to roll a boulder off a ledge so it lands on that platform while it’s out.

Second roomRight launcher, then a corner launcher to the topMuch longer drop, and you have to dive back to the post in time

Step 1: See What the Post Does

Head into the first room and strike the glowing yellow post. Watch the platform that slides out: that’s where your boulder needs to land.

Step 2: Set Up the Boulder

Stand on the launcher on the left and ride it up to the higher platform. Grab the boulder with Ultrahand and set it on the ramp. Then hustle back down to the post.

Ultrahand does the heavy lifting: set each boulder on its ramp, then race back to the post.

Step 3: Time the First Catch

Swing at the post as the boulder rolls off the end of the ramp. The ramp curls up slightly at the very end, so wait until the boulder is tipping over the edge. It feels late. That’s the sweet spot.

Missed? No stress. Fetch the boulder with Ultrahand, put it back on the ramp and try again.

Step 4: Climb the Second Room

Once the first target is hit, use the launcher to cross into the second room. Note where its yellow post is, then ride the launcher on the right side up to a second launcher in the corner. That one takes you to the top platform.

Step 5: The Big Catch

Put the second boulder on its ramp, then dive straight back down toward the post. Skip the paraglider and free fall; it’s much faster. Land on the post’s platform, wait a beat, and strike the post so the target slides out just as the boulder arrives.

Nailed it? The gate to the altar opens.

How to Get the Hanging Chest

Before you walk to the altar, grab the chest. It hangs from a rope under a ledge on the far side of the second room, above a small pool of water.

  • Get the angle: ride the ground level launcher up and look across the room for the ledge.
  • Cut the rope: shoot it while you’re in the air (drawing your bow mid air slows time), or hit it with a melee swing while gliding past.
  • Fish it out: the chest drops into the pool. Lift it out with Ultrahand and open it for a Large Zonai Charge.

A Large Zonai Charge holds a lot more energy than a regular charge. Feed it to a Zonai device dispenser, or use it to keep your battery from draining for a while when a build needs a little longer in the air. Four Lights of Blessing get you a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel at a Goddess Statue. In the Depths, Mayak’s counterpart is the Kayam Lightroot, the shrine’s name spelled backwards.

Pro Tips for Timely Catches

  • Watch the lip: the end of each ramp curls up. Swing too early and the platform has come and gone before the boulder drops.
  • Use room one as practice: the first catch is the same timing on a smaller drop. Learn it there.
  • Free fall in room two: diving instead of gliding is what gets you to the post in time.
  • Check your arrows: no arrows means no chest, unless you can land a gliding melee hit on the rope.
