Want the cap of the Hero of Time on your head? In Tears of the Kingdom you don’t need an amiibo for it. The Cap of Time sits in a chest on a rock beside a lava waterfall deep in the Depths under Hebra, and with the right gear it’s a quick trip.

Here’s the full breakdown: both ways to get it, the exact chest spot, what to bring, the set bonus, and how to buy it back if you ever sell it.

Cap of Time quick facts.

Method 1: The Depths Chest

This route is guaranteed and costs nothing but a little prep. Your best bet for most players.

Step 1: Pack for Lava

  • Fire protection: Wear the Flamebreaker set (sold in Goron City) or drink Fireproof Elixirs. The lavafalls set you alight without it.
  • Light: Grab a stack of Brightbloom Seeds (think one every few steps). The Depths are pitch dark.
  • Food: Gloom damage in the Depths caps your hearts until you heal at a Lightroot or the surface, so pack hearty meals.

Step 2: Get to the Sturnida Lavafalls

The Sturnida Lavafalls sit under the Sturnida Basin, between the Nupisoyuat and Worihas Lightroots. If you already have either one, warp there and head toward the glow of the lava.

No Lightroots in the area yet? Dive through the Hyrule Ridge Chasm and head northwest. It’s a longer walk, but it lights up new Lightroots on the way (Pro tip: activate every Lightroot you pass. Each one is a free fast travel point for later).

The Cap of Time is hidden in the Depths, so the trip starts with a chasm dive.

Step 3: Find the Rock by the Lavafall

  • The landmark: A lava waterfall pouring down beside a couple of tall rock ledges.
  • The chest: It sits on the higher of the two ledges at -4078, 2800, -0450.
  • Getting up: Climb nearby high ground and glide over to the ledge, or build a quick ramp with Ultrahand.

Open the chest and the Cap of Time is yours. Nailed it?

Flamebreaker armor or Fireproof Elixirs keep Link from burning near the Sturnida Lavafalls.

Own the Link (Ocarina of Time) amiibo? Scanning it can drop pieces of the Time set.

  • Open the menu: Hold the ability button and pick the amiibo icon.
  • Find space: Stand somewhere open so the reward chest has room to land.
  • Scan: Tap the amiibo on your controller’s NFC point.
  • Check the drop: Rewards are random, so you won’t always get the cap. You can scan each amiibo once per day.

Oh, and the amiibo route doesn’t stop you from grabbing the Depths chest too. If you’re going for the full set anyway, the chest is the reliable option. Check out our BOTW amiibo rewards guide if you want to know how the same figure works in the previous game.

The Time Set and Its Bonus

The Cap of Time is one of three pieces. Collect them all to wear the Hero of Time’s full outfit.

PieceWhere
Cap of TimeChest at the Sturnida Lavafalls, Depths under Hebra
Tunic of TimeLindor Canyon Mine, in the Depths below the Lindor’s Brow area
Trousers of TimeGerudo Canyon Mine, Depths under the Gerudo Highlands
The Time set pieces in Tears of the Kingdom.
  • Set bonus: Upgrade all three pieces to 2 stars and wear them together for Attack Up, roughly a 20% damage boost.
  • Upgrades: Every Great Fairy level costs Amber plus one Star Fragment: 10, 20, 30 and then 40 Amber for the four stars, so save your Star Fragments.
  • Defense: Each piece goes from 3 at base to 20 at four stars.

Your call whether it’s worth it. The Barbarian and Fierce Deity sets give bigger attack boosts, but neither looks like Ocarina of Time.

Lost It? Buy It Back

Once you’ve found the cap, it joins the stock at the Bargainer Statues in the Depths for 400 Poes. The statues restock after a Blood Moon, so sold or not, you’re never locked out of it.

Pro Tips

  • Elixir backup: Even in Flamebreaker armor, carry one Fireproof Elixir in case you swap gear by accident.
  • Watch your footing: Lava edges are hard to read in the dark. Throw a Brightbloom before every jump.
  • Hoard Poes: Keep 400 spare, just in case.
  • Use the map: The TOTK interactive map makes the Depths far less confusing.
