The Climbing Boots are one of the best quality of life pickups in Tears of the Kingdom. They make Link climb faster, they are part of a three piece set with a stamina saving bonus, and they sit in a cave you can reach early in the game.

Here’s what actually happens under the hood: where the cave is, the one puzzle standing between you and the chest, what the boots do, and where the rest of the Climbing set hides.

The Tech: launch from the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower and glide south. The byroad entrance is a short flight away. Watch out for other cave mouths in the same hills; if your pin says you are off by a few hundred units, you are at the wrong hole.

Step by Step: Getting the Boots

  1. Enter Upland Zorana Byroad and follow the main tunnel. Bring a few weapons and some Brightbloom Seeds, because the passages get dark.
  2. Take the east side passage. About halfway through the byroad, a side passage branches off on the east side. Follow it.
  3. Find the sunken ruins. Near the end of that passage you reach a chamber with ruined buildings sitting in water.
  4. Lift the floodgate. Grab the big gate with Ultrahand and raise it. The water drains out of the chamber.
  5. Check behind the buildings. At the back of one of the ruined buildings, a tunnel leads to a small room. The chest inside holds the Climbing Boots.

Test Results: the only real puzzle here is noticing that the gate is grabbable. Players who swim around the flooded room looking for a switch lose ten minutes. Do not be those players.

What the Climbing Boots Do

The in-game text says the boots have special no-slip toes that help you cling to walls. In practice, Climb Speed Up means Link covers more wall for the same stamina, so every cliff gets cheaper.

  • One piece helps: the boots alone already speed up climbing.
  • Three pieces help more: wear the boots, the Climbing Gear and the Climber’s Bandanna together and the speed boost stacks.
  • Set bonus: upgrade all three to two stars at a Great Fairy and the full set unlocks Climbing Jump Stamina Up, which makes climbing jumps cost less stamina.

Upgrading the Boots

Great Fairies can enhance the boots once you have freed their fountains. Expect to spend climbing themed materials such as Hightail Lizards and Swift Violets, plus rupees. Swift Violets grow on cliff faces, so the boots help you farm their own upgrade materials. This breaks the game (in the best way).

The other two Climbing set pieces are a cave trip each, one near Lookout Landing and one east of Zora’s Domain.

Climbing Gear

North Hyrule Plain Cave sits northwest of Lookout Landing. Inside you go up and through a section with water and waterfalls. Wet walls make Link slip, so jump climb in short bursts or wait to dry off. The chest is past the waterfall at the top.

Climber’s Bandanna

Ploymus Mountain Cave is east of Zora’s Domain. Warping to a shrine near Mipha’s Court and heading east is the quickest route in.

Is It Worth Getting Early?

Short answer: yes. Climbing is how you reach shrines, Korok seeds, cave entrances and Skyview Tower tops, and early on your stamina wheel is tiny. Every bit of climb speed means fewer dead stops halfway up a cliff. The boots cost nothing but a short detour and one Ultrahand puzzle, which is a great trade for gear you will wear for dozens of hours.

Pro Tips

  • Pack stamina food: even with the boots, long climbs eat stamina. Our cooking and elixirs guide shows how to make meals that refill and extend the wheel.
  • Rain still wins: the boots do not stop slipping in the rain. Wait it out or take a different route.
  • Mark the caves: pin all three caves before you set out so you can grab the set in one trip.
  • Dye it: the Kochi Dye Shop in Hateno Village can change the colors if you do not like the default look.
