Listen up. You just woke up on the Great Sky Island with no gear, three hearts and a defense stat that’s basically a rumor. The Archaic set is the first armor Tears of the Kingdom hands you, and if you’re sprinting past the chests that hold it, we need to talk.
There are three Archaic pieces, all on the Great Sky Island: the Archaic Legwear, the Archaic Tunic and the Archaic Warm Greaves. Here’s exactly where each one is, what it does and when to swap it out. Let’s get into it.
Archaic Set at a Glance
| Piece | Slot | Base defense | Bonus | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Archaic Legwear | Legs | 1 | None | Chest near the exit of the Room of Awakening |
| Archaic Tunic | Body | 1 | None | Stone chest near the east entrance of Pondside Cave |
| Archaic Warm Greaves | Legs | 2 | Cold resistance | Chest inside a giant tree stump north of Gutanbac Shrine |
- Set bonus: none. There’s no hidden perk for wearing the pieces together.
- Upgrades: the Great Fairies can’t enhance Archaic gear, so don’t save materials for it.
- Dyeing: yes. Kochi Dye Shop in Hateno Village can recolor it once you reach the surface.

Archaic Legwear: Room of Awakening
The Play: this one is practically handed to you. Leave the Room of Awakening, follow the path through the pools and grab the chest near the exit before you step out onto the island. Open it, equip the Legwear, done.
Stop sleeping on this. It’s one point of defense, and at three hearts that matters.
Archaic Tunic: Pondside Cave
This is the piece most players walk right past. Here’s the play:
- Head for Pondside Cave: it sits east of In-isa Shrine, the shrine where you get Fuse. The cave has two entrances, west and east.
- Watch the cave crowd: expect Keese on the ceiling and a Bubbulfrog inside. You can run past most of them, but the Bubbulfrog drops a Bubbul Gem, so take the fight if you can.
- Find the stone chest: it’s near the cave’s east entrance. Open it for the Archaic Tunic.
Why This Slaps: the cave is also loaded with ore deposits, so swing a Fused rock hammer at the walls on your way through for Flint, Amber and Rock Salt.
Archaic Warm Greaves: Gutanbac Shrine
The Warm Greaves are the real prize. They’re the best early answer to the freezing snowfields on the Great Sky Island, where Link starts losing hearts without protection. Searching for an Archaic Warm Tunic or helm? There isn’t one: the Warm Greaves are the only warm Archaic piece, and they replace the Legwear in the leg slot.

- Clear Gutanbac Shrine: it’s the snowy shrine that gives you Ascend.
- Look north: step outside and spot the huge tree stump on the icy hill.
- Ascend inside: stand under the stump’s ledge and use Ascend to pop straight up into it.
- Open the chest: it’s next to an unlit campfire inside the stump, tucked in a recess, so check the corners if the hollow looks empty. Equip the Archaic Warm Greaves.
Until you have them, cook Spicy Peppers into Sautéed Peppers for cold resistance. Our TOTK Recipe Book guide covers the cold-weather meals.
Surviving the Cold Before the Greaves
Here’s the play if you reach the snow early. The cold drains your hearts slowly, so move with purpose and don’t stand around admiring the view.
- Cook before you climb: grab Spicy Peppers from the island, find a cooking pot and make Sautéed Peppers. Four or five peppers in one dish buys a lot more time than one.
- Check the timer: the cold resistance timer sits at the top left of the screen. Head inside the shrine or the stump before it runs out.
- Go straight for the stump: the moment Gutanbac Shrine gives you Ascend, the Warm Greaves are a few seconds away. Equip them and the cold problem is solved for the rest of the island.
Which Legs Should You Wear?
Trust. On the Great Sky Island, the Warm Greaves win every time: one more defense point and built-in cold resistance. The plain Legwear only makes sense if you want the classic look. Once you’re on the surface, both get outclassed fast.
- Early swap: the Hylian set and other shop armor on the surface outclass the Archaic pieces quickly.
- Lost a piece? You can fly back to the Great Sky Island later. The Tunic can also be bought again from Cece at Ventest Clothing Boutique in Hateno Village.
- Fashion play: dye the set at Kochi Dye Shop and keep it as a look once your stats come from elsewhere.
Great Sky Island Route That Grabs Everything
Do this. Thank me later. Clear the four shrines in this order and pick up all three pieces on the way:
- Room of Awakening: grab the Legwear before you step outside.
- Ukouh Shrine: get Ultrahand.
- In-isa Shrine: get Fuse, then detour into Pondside Cave for the Tunic.
- Gutanbac Shrine: get Ascend, then pop up into the stump for the Warm Greaves.
- Nachoyah Shrine: get Recall and finish the island.

No. Great Fairies can’t enhance Archaic armor, but you can dye it at Kochi Dye Shop in Hateno Village.
Does the Archaic set have a set bonus?
