Let me paint the picture: a volcano that sets you on fire if you look at it wrong, a Goron kid who rolls like a cannonball, and a giant mechanical salamander crawling along the rim of Death Mountain. Divine Beast Vah Rudania is the hottest dungeon in Breath of the Wild, in every sense.
So here’s the deal: this walkthrough takes you from the first steps toward Goron City to the Fireblight Ganon fight and every reward after it. If you only need the boss, jump to our Fireblight Ganon guide.
Before You Go: Beating the Heat
Death Mountain’s slopes are scorching. Without flame protection, Link takes heat damage, and in the hottest areas he simply catches fire. You need Flame Guard.
- Fireproof Elixirs: Cook a Fireproof Lizard or Smotherwing Butterfly with a monster part at any cooking pot. Bring several, the climb takes a while.
- Flamebreaker Armor: The Ripped and Shredded shop in Goron City sells the full set (helm, armor and boots). One piece is enough for basic Flame Guard.
- Free chest piece: Kima, at the Southern Mine below Goron City, gives you the Flamebreaker Armor for catching ten Fireproof Lizards in his side quest, Fireproof Lizard Roundup.
- Hottest zones: Around Darunia Lake and the summit, one piece is not always enough. Pair the armor with an elixir, or wear two pieces.
The closest tower is the Eldin Tower, and the Foothill Stable at the base of the mountain is the natural place to stock up before the climb.

Step by Step: Getting Into the Beast
- Step 1: In Goron City, speak with Boss Bludo. Vah Rudania has been rampaging along the crater, and his helper Yunobo has gone missing.
- Step 2: Head north out of the city and up the path toward Darunia Lake. Watch out for Fire Chuchus and rock throwing enemies.
- Step 3: At the edge of the lava lake, a Goron by a cannon tells you Yunobo went to the Abandoned North Mine. Cross the lake by riding the updrafts and hopping between islands.
- Step 4: Find Yunobo trapped in the mine. Free him and he joins you.
- Step 5: Head up the long bridges toward the crater. At each cannon, have Yunobo jump in and fire him at Vah Rudania. Clear the Moblins and Lizalfos first so they don’t knock him off.
- Step 6: After the final shot, the Beast retreats into the crater. Glide down after it and climb aboard.
I’m not gonna lie, the cannon run is the part that trips people up. Take it slow, kill everything near each cannon, then line up Yunobo.
Inside Vah Rudania
Here’s where it gets interesting. Once you grab the map from the Guidance Stone, you can tilt the whole Beast 90 degrees to the left or right. Walls become floors, ramps appear, and the puzzles open up.
- Fire tools: Blue flames light torches, and you can carry a lit torch from one to another (just don’t run, or it goes out). Fire arrows light distant torches and burn the leaves that block doors.
- Magnesis: Moves metal cubes and pushes metal doors open.
- Terminal 1: Behind metal doors on the left. Burn the leaves, then use Magnesis to swing the doors.
- Terminal 2: Light a far torch through a gated hole, then block the wall of flame with a metal cube.
- Terminal 3: Light a distant torch with blue flame, then follow the rolling ball down the ramp.
- Terminal 4: Use Magnesis to drop the ball into a pit and open the gate.
- Terminal 5: Sits on a spike along the Beast’s spine. Stand on the side of the spike, tilt the Beast, and activate it.
Completionists, eleven chests are hidden in here, including a Silver Rupee. Shoot every glowing eyeball you see, check the tail tip, and look under the diagonal beam. Grab them all before you finish, just to be safe.

Fireblight Ganon
With all five terminals active, use the Main Control Unit at the top of the Beast to start the fight. Stay near the middle so you don’t fall into the volcano. Here is the short version; our full Fireblight Ganon boss guide covers the prep, both phases and the Champions’ Ballad rematch.
- Phase 1: Big sword swings and fireballs from its hand. Sidestep or backflip the sword for a Perfect Dodge and a Flurry Rush, and shoot the eye to stun it.
- Phase 2 (below half health): It hides behind a force field and charges a huge fireball. Freeze the fireball with an ice arrow, or throw a Remote Bomb into the charge and detonate it near Ganon to stun it.
- Laser blast: When a red laser targets you, a well timed Perfect Guard sends the blast straight back.
Rewards
- Heart Container: Pick it up after the fight.
- Daruk’s Protection: Granted when you activate the Main Control Unit again. Hold ZL to raise a barrier that blocks attacks. You can turn it off in Key Items.
- Boulder Breaker: Return to Goron City, talk to Bludo, then open the chest on the throne in his house for Daruk’s weapon.
The worldbuilding here is next level: Daruk died inside this Beast a hundred years ago, and Yunobo is his descendant. The kid who could barely hold a conversation is the one who drags Rudania into the crater.
Vah Rudania FAQ
How do you stop burning on Death Mountain?
Wear at least one Flamebreaker piece or drink a Fireproof Elixir. In the hottest spots, combine both or wear two armor pieces.
How many terminals are in Vah Rudania?
Five, plus the Main Control Unit at the top.
What is Fireblight Ganon weak to?
Shots to the eye stun it. In phase 2, freeze its fireball with an ice arrow or blow up a Remote Bomb beside it while it charges.
What do you get for completing Vah Rudania?
A Heart Container, Daruk’s Protection and, from Bludo’s house, the Boulder Breaker.
Anyway, with Rudania aimed at Hyrule Castle, you are one Beast closer to the finale. Grab another Fireproof Elixir and enjoy the view from the crater on your way out.
