Fireblight Ganon Guide: Beat Vah Rudania’s Final Boss in BOTW

Beat Fireblight Ganon in Breath of the Wild: dodge sword tells, break his fire shield with Remote Bombs, and snipe his eye for the win.

So here’s the deal: you’ve cracked every terminal inside Vah Rudania, the Main Control Unit is in sight, and a floating wall of Malice with a sword bigger than a Goron blocks the way. Fireblight Ganon is the last thing standing between you and Daruk’s freedom, and he does not play fair.

When I first reached him I walked in with a pile of wooden bows and a cocky attitude. Neither lasted long. This guide covers his full moveset, the Remote Bomb trick that breaks phase two, what you walk away with, and how the much nastier Champions’ Ballad rematch works.

Where Fireblight Ganon Waits

Fireblight Ganon is the boss of Divine Beast Vah Rudania, the giant salamander crawling over Death Mountain in the Eldin region. You reach him after activating all five terminals and heading to the Main Control Unit. If you still need help with the dungeon itself, our Vah Rudania walkthrough covers every terminal, and the Goron City guide covers Yunobo and the cannon run that gets you on board.

Lore Deep Dive: this is the phantom that killed Daruk a hundred years ago. Calamity Ganon sent four of these Blights into the Divine Beasts, and each one took down a Champion. Beating him is the moment the game hands Daruk his revenge, and the worldbuilding here is next level once you’ve seen his memory.

  • Location: inside Divine Beast Vah Rudania, Death Mountain, Eldin.
  • Phases: two. Phase two starts at half health.
  • Weak point: the single eye in his face. Arrows to the eye stun him.
  • Elemental weakness: he is a fire creature, so Ice Arrows hit hard.
  • Key item: Remote Bombs.
  • Reward: a Heart Container and Daruk’s Protection.

Prep Before You Open the Door

Look, I get it, you want to charge straight in. Spend two minutes on prep first. Death Mountain is brutal on gear: wooden weapons, shields and bows catch fire in the extreme heat around the crater, so pack metal gear for the climb and the dungeon.

  • Flame protection: the approach needs level two flame protection (two Flamebreaker pieces, or one piece plus a Fireproof Elixir). Goron City sells the Flamebreaker set.
  • Bow and arrows: a sturdy metal bow and a good stack of arrows. Ice Arrows are the luxury pick.
  • Two handed weapon: a claymore or similar heavy hitter is ideal for punishing him when he is stunned on the ground.
  • Food: full heart meals, plus an attack boost if you have one. Our BOTW recipes guide lists the best options.

Phase One: The Sword Duel

The Setup: phase one is a straightforward melee fight. He stays close to the ground, swings that massive blade, and leaves big openings if you dodge cleanly.

AttackPhaseWhat to do
Overhead slash1 and 2Side hop just before it lands, then Flurry Rush
Wide sweep1 and 2Backflip out of range; it comes with little warning
Triple spin1 and 2Back away while he charges, punish after the third spin
Small fireballs1 and 2Strafe sideways or shoot them with Ice Arrows
Giant fireball2Throw a Remote Bomb while he inhales, detonate it at him
Flame slash2Dodge, then ride the updraft it leaves with your paraglider
Eye laser2Hide behind a pillar or sidestep right before it fires
Fireblight Ganon attacks and how to answer them.

The overhead slash and the spin are the easiest swings to Flurry Rush. The wide sweep is harder to read because the blade covers so much ground, so I usually just backflip it and wait for the next opening. Whenever he backs off, start hammering his eye with arrows: a clean eye shot drops him and opens a free combo window.

Phase Two: Breaking the Fire Shield

This is where it gets WILD. At half health he rises higher, sets his blade on fire, and wraps himself in an orange barrier. Arrows and swords bounce off that barrier, so you need a new plan.

Here’s Where It Gets Wild: when he starts sucking in air to build a giant fireball, the barrier spins and pulls everything toward him. Throw a Remote Bomb into that pull and detonate it as it reaches him. The blast shatters the barrier and knocks him out of the air. Run in and unload with your heaviest weapon while he is down.

  • Don’t detonate early: wait until the bomb is right against him, or the barrier just eats the blast.
  • Use the updrafts: his flame slashes leave rising gusts. Paraglide up, pull your bow mid air, and snipe the eye in slow motion.
  • Respect the laser: in this phase he can lock on like a Guardian and fire a beam. Break line of sight with the pillars in the arena.
  • Repeat the loop: bomb the barrier, punish, shoot the eye, repeat until he falls.

Rewards: The Payoff

The Payoff: Fireblight Ganon leaves behind a Heart Container. Head to the Main Control Unit afterwards, and Daruk’s spirit retakes Vah Rudania, aims it at Hyrule Castle, and grants you Daruk’s Protection. That ability throws up a shield that blocks any attack automatically, then needs time to recharge. It turns a lot of scary fights into easy ones, so get comfortable with it.

The Champions’ Ballad Rematch

If you own the Expansion Pass, The Champions’ Ballad brings him back. The fight in the Illusory Realm is the finale of EX Champion Daruk’s Song, and it strips you down to a fixed loadout instead of your own gear.

  • Loadout: a Boulder Breaker, a Knight’s Bow, five Ice Arrows, the Flamebreaker set and a few cooked meals. No shield.
  • Same tactics, less margin: Flurry Rush in phase one, Remote Bomb the barrier in phase two, and save those five Ice Arrows for the eye or for the laser and fireball attacks.
  • Your powers still work: Champion abilities you have unlocked carry in, so wait for them to recharge before you start.

I’m not gonna lie, the rematch humbled me more than the original. Confident dodging is the whole fight.

Once Rudania is calm, it is worth tidying up Eldin. The Eldin Tower guide fills in the map, and if you are still deciding whether to jump to the sequel after this, read our BOTW or TOTK comparison.

Fireblight Ganon FAQ

What is Fireblight Ganon weak to?

Ice Arrows and shots to his eye. A clean eye hit stuns him, and in phase two a Remote Bomb detonated while he inhales breaks his fire barrier.

How do you break Fireblight Ganon’s shield?

Wait until he sucks in air to make a giant fireball, throw a Remote Bomb so it gets pulled in, and detonate it as it touches him. Normal attacks bounce off the barrier.

Do you need fire resistance to fight Fireblight Ganon?

You need level two flame protection to reach Vah Rudania on Death Mountain, and you should bring metal gear because wooden items burn in the heat around the crater.

What do you get for beating Fireblight Ganon?

A Heart Container, and after activating the Main Control Unit, Daruk’s Protection, which automatically blocks incoming attacks.

Can you fight Fireblight Ganon again?

Yes. The Champions’ Ballad DLC brings him back in the Illusory Realm as the finale of EX Champion Daruk’s Song, with a fixed loadout and no shield.

The Payoff: anyway, that’s Fireblight Ganon. Learn the three sword tells, bomb the barrier at the right moment, snipe the eye whenever he hovers, and Daruk finally gets the ending he earned a hundred years ago.
