A towering stone sentinel tears itself out of the floor and starts stomping your way? Welcome to the Pensieve Guardian, the boss waiting in the final chamber of Percival Rackham’s Trial. It looks terrifying, and it can wipe you fast if you get sloppy.
The good news: this fight is all about patterns. Learn two attacks, keep the right spells slotted and save your Ancient Magic for the openings, and you’re winning. Here’s the full breakdown.
Where You Fight the Pensieve Guardian
Percival Rackham’s Trial is the first of the Keepers’ trials in the main story and part of the main story you tackle with Professor Fig. You work through puzzles and a few fights with smaller Pensieve enemies before the Guardian shows up.
- The Arena: a large circular chamber at the end of the trial. The Guardian rises out of the floor in the middle.
- The Enemy: a huge armored Pensieve construct with a big health bar but a small, readable moveset.
- The Danger: a ground stomp that sends a shockwave along the floor, and a charged orb that you have to break with the right spell color.
- The Opening: breaking the orb or hitting it with Ancient Magic staggers it, and that’s when you do real damage.

Set Up Your Spells Before the Fight
The orb mechanic decides this fight, so your loadout matters more than your level. Here’s how to get ready:
- Yellow spell: slot Levioso (or another yellow Control spell like Arresto Momentum or Glacius if you have it).
- Purple spell: slot Accio or Depulso, both purple Force spells.
- Damage spells: fill the rest with your red damage spells, like Incendio, Diffindo or Confringo, for punishing the stagger.
- Potions: pack Wiggenweld Potions, plus Edurus for damage resistance or Maxima for extra damage if you have them.
(Pro tip: check the background color of each spell slot before you walk in. In the heat of the fight, you match by color, not by name.)
| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Ground stomp | Raises a leg high, red warning around your head | Dodge roll sideways at the last moment; Protego won’t stop it |
| Yellow orb | Glowing yellow sphere charging in front of it | Hit it with a yellow spell such as Levioso |
| Purple orb | Glowing purple sphere charging in front of it | Hit it with a purple spell such as Accio |
| Orb launch (if you miss) | The orb finishes charging and fires | Dodge roll the instant it flies; it’s very fast |
| Recovery blast | Rises back up after a stagger | Roll away before it’s fully standing |
Step by Step: How To Beat the Pensieve Guardian
- Clear the warm-up: deal with the smaller Pensieve enemies first and use them to build your combo and Ancient Magic meter. Combos of 10+ hits drop little blue Ancient Magic orbs, so grab them.
- Keep your distance: stay at mid range so you can see both the leg wind-up and the orb clearly.
- Dodge the stomp: when it lifts a leg, roll to the side as it comes down. Rolling too early is the classic mistake.
- Break the orb: as soon as it starts charging, read the color and fire the matching spell. The window is short, so react right away.
- Punish the stagger: when it drops to a knee, it takes extra damage from everything, so unload your damage spells and Basic Cast combos.
- Back off when it stands up: as it recovers from a stagger it lets out an area blast around itself. Roll away the moment it starts rising.
- Spend Ancient Magic: fire it whenever your meter is full. It takes a huge chunk off the health bar and also completes one of the fight’s two Duelling Feats (hit it with Ancient Magic, and destroy the orb while it charges).
- Repeat: stomp, orb, stagger, damage. Heal between cycles, not in the middle of a wind-up.
Oh, and if you hug the Guardian too closely, the camera hides the Ancient Magic prompt and the leg tells. Backing off a few steps makes everything easier to read.
Talents That Make It Easier
None of these are required, but on higher difficulties they smooth out the rough spots. Your call on which fit your build.
- Basic Cast Mastery: hitting with Basic Cast reduces your spell cooldowns, so your orb counters are ready more often.
- Wiggenweld Potency: your potions heal more per sip.
- Evasion Absorption: dodging unblockable attacks fills your Ancient Magic meter, and this fight is mostly dodging.
- Disarming Curse: a Dark Arts talent that curses enemies you hit with Expelliarmus, so they take extra damage.
- Maxima Potion Potency: boosts Maxima’s damage further and lets your attacks break enemy shields while it’s active, which is ideal for the stagger windows.

What You Get for Beating It
Beating the Guardian clears the last big obstacle in Percival Rackham’s Trial and lets you finish the quest, moving the Keepers’ story forward. It’s also the best practice you’ll get for the game’s later bosses, which use the same mix of unblockable attacks and color matched counters.
Oh, and this isn’t the last Pensieve Guardian you’ll meet. A tougher one waits in Charles Rookwood’s Trial later in the story, with extra attacks on top of the stomp and orbs, so the habits you build here pay off.

Pensieve Guardian FAQ
How do you destroy the Pensieve Guardian’s orb?
Hit it with a spell of the same color while it charges. Yellow orbs break with a yellow spell like Levioso, purple orbs with a purple spell like Accio.
Can you block the Pensieve Guardian’s stomp with Protego?
No. The stomp shockwave is unblockable, so you have to dodge roll sideways as the leg comes down.
What spells should you bring to Rackham’s Trial?
At least one yellow spell (Levioso), one purple spell (Accio or Depulso) and your strongest damage spells, plus a stack of Wiggenweld Potions.
Is the Pensieve Guardian in Rookwood’s Trial the same fight?
It’s the same type of enemy, but the Rookwood version comes later and adds extra attacks, so it’s a tougher fight.
Nailed it? Dodge the stomp, match the orb, unload when it kneels, and the Guardian goes down. Take a breath, heal up, and head on to the rest of Percival Rackham’s Trial.
