Charles Rookwood’s Trial is the second Keepers’ trial in Hogwarts Legacy, at Rookwood Castle in Feldcroft. You sneak into the castle with Professor Fig, open a rune door, solve a chain of portal rooms where every room exists in two versions, then clear an arena of Pensieve Sentries before a tougher Pensieve Guardian with a ball and chain.
Here is the whole trial in order: getting in, the rune door, the portal puzzles, the boss and what comes after. If you want the first Guardian fight broken down on its own, our Pensieve Guardian guide for Rackham’s Trial covers it, and the Hogwarts Legacy hub lists every other quest.

How to Get Into Rookwood Castle
- Meet Fig: travel to Rookwood Castle in Feldcroft and meet Professor Fig at the quest marker.
- Go round the back: follow the marker to the rear of the castle and deal with the goblin Loyalists there. Disillusionment lets you thin them out with stealth.
- Climb in: levitate the crate next to the scratched wall with Wingardium Leviosa and climb up from it. A cutscene plays as you get inside.
- Loot on the way: there are chests around the courtyard and ramparts before you step onto the scaffolding and drop down into the castle.
The Rune Door
The first sealed door is a timing check. Stand on the central platform and fire Basic Cast at the three rune switches around the room one after another. If one switch fades before you hit the last, start the set again; turning on the spot between casts is faster than moving.
The Trial Rooms: Pools, the Portal and Moving Blocks
Past Charles Rookwood’s portrait, an ancient magic pool reveals the portal that the whole trial is built around. Every room has two versions, and stepping through the portal swaps between them: a pillar that blocks you on one side can be moved on the other, and the portal’s blue side is where you can grab and move blocks.
- First rooms: use the ancient magic pools, then levitate a chest through the blue side of the portal and move a pillar to make a path you can climb. Rune switches on the bridges reveal small chests.
- Moving the portal: a rune switch repositions the portal itself. Move it, then pull the pillar closer so you can climb out.
- Combat room: a Protector and its helpers guard the next pool. Afterward, a rune switch rotates a platform; put a crate on it with Wingardium Leviosa and use the switch again.
- Wisp room: follow the wisps to a pool that raises a pillar platform. Downstairs, step through the portal to reveal a hidden Protector, rotate the bridge with the rune switch, and push a crate through the portal with Depulso to get it where you need it.
Save manually before you move a key block or crate: a bad throw can drop it into a pit. Most rooms also hide a small chest off the main path, so look around both versions of each room before you leave.
Final Arena: Sentries and the Pensieve Guardian
The trial ends in an arena, and the Guardian does not show up until you clear it. The first wave is smaller and larger Pensieve Sentries, and some of them are invisible.
- Kill the visible ones first. They are the ones hitting you.
- Use the portal. The portal in the middle of the arena makes the hidden Sentries visible. Go through it once the visible group is down.
- Bank Ancient Magic. Build your meter on the Sentries and do not spend it. You want it full when the Guardian rises.
If the Guardian kills you, you restart before the Sentry wave, not at the boss. That makes every death expensive, so play the warm-up carefully and do not waste potions on it.
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Quest | Charles Rookwood’s Trial (main story Keepers’ trial at Rookwood Castle, Feldcroft region) |
| Warm-up | A wave of Pensieve Sentries, some of them invisible |
| Phase 1 | Stomps and charging coloured orbs (yellow, purple and red), same as Rackham’s Guardian |
| Phase 2 | From around half health it swings a ball and chain (flail). Parry it with Protego and dodge the arena-wide shockwave when it slams down |
| After a stun | An unblockable blast wave when it recovers |
| Duelling Feats | Hit it with Ancient Magic, destroy an orb while it charges |
Loadout: Spells, Potions and Talents
The orb counter decides this fight, so your spell sets matter more than your level.
- Yellow spell: Levioso, or another yellow Control spell like Arresto Momentum.
- Purple spell: Accio or Depulso.
- Damage: fill the rest with red damage spells like Confringo, Expelliarmus, Incendio or Diffindo. They break red orbs and hit hard in the stagger windows.
- Potions: a stack of Wiggenweld, plus Maxima for damage or Edurus for defence.
- Talents: anything that improves Wiggenweld healing, Ancient Magic gain or spell cooldowns earns its slot on Hard.
Match by slot colour, not by spell name. Mid fight, your eyes find the colour faster than the icon.

Step by Step: How to Beat the Pensieve Guardian
- Clear the Sentries. Visible ones first, then use the portal to expose the rest.
- Watch the stomp. When it lifts a leg, roll sideways as it comes down. Rolling early is the classic mistake.
- Break the orbs. When it starts charging a glowing orb, read the colour and hit it with a matching spell before it fires. A broken orb stuns the Guardian.
- Punish the stun. Unload damage spells and Basic Cast combos, and spend Ancient Magic whenever the prompt appears.
- Get out before it recovers. When the stun ends it releases a blast wave around itself. You cannot block it, so back off or roll out of range as it stands up.
- Handle the ball and chain. After you have done significant damage, it starts swinging a ball and chain. Unlike the stomp, this one can be blocked and parried with Protego, which sends damage back at it.
- Finish with Ancient Magic. Save a full meter for the last stretch. It ends the fight fast once the Guardian is low.
Rackham’s Guardian vs Rookwood’s Guardian
| Mechanic | Rackham’s Trial | Rookwood’s Trial |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up enemies | Smaller Pensieve enemies | Sentries, some invisible, revealed by a portal |
| Stomp and orbs | Yes | Yes |
| Ball and chain | No | Yes, can be parried |
Small Tricks That Help
- Parry the chain: Protego plus a follow-up Stupefy turns the ball and chain from a threat into free damage.
- Hold Ancient Magic during the blast: do not start an Ancient Magic animation as the stun ends. Dodge first, then spend it in the next opening.
- Mid range is home: hugging the Guardian hides the leg wind up and the Ancient Magic prompt behind the camera. A few steps back fixes both.
- Patched? No. The fight plays the same on current versions, including the Nintendo Switch 2 release.
After the Guardian
With the Guardian down, follow the next marker to the Pensieve and watch Charles Rookwood’s memories, which move the Keepers’ story forward. The exit leads back to the Map Chamber, where you talk to Percival Rackham’s portrait and then to Professor Fig. It is also the best rehearsal you will get for the later boss fights, which mix unblockable attacks with colour matched counters the same way.
