Staring up at a giant rock crab with one huge glowing eye? That’s Marbled Gohma, the boss at the bottom of the Fire Temple in Tears of the Kingdom. It looks scary, but once you know the loop, it is one of the friendlier temple bosses. Here’s how to break its legs, climb to the eye and finish it in two phases.

What to Bring

  • Flame protection: Death Mountain is scorching. The Flamebreaker set or a fireproof elixir keeps you from catching fire on the way down.
  • Strong melee weapons: Your damage window on the eye is short, so bring hard hitting weapons with good materials fused on. Wooden weapons can burn in the heat, so pick stone or metal.
  • Backups: Carry a couple of spares. You don’t want a weapon breaking mid stun.
  • Hearty food: A few healing meals. Our best recipes guide lists the strongest ones.

(Pro tip: if you are new to fusing, read our Fuse guide first. A strong fused material makes every damage window count.)

Starting the Fight

Head into the arena and look up. Gohma starts out hidden, so launch Yunobo at the wall with the big grey stone on it. He rolls up and smashes the rocks on the ceiling, and Gohma drops into the arena. Nailed it? The fight is on.

Phase 1: Break the Legs

  • Step 1: Aim Yunobo’s roll at one of Gohma’s legs and send him. Each hit cracks the rock armor on that leg.
  • Step 2: Keep hitting legs. When enough are broken, Gohma collapses.
  • Step 3: Its fallen body forms a ramp. Run straight up it to the eye and hit it as many times as you can.
  • Step 4: Jump off as soon as it starts to rise. Staying on while it stands up costs you some health.

Watch for these while you work:

  • Stomps: When a leg lifts near you, run sideways. Don’t run underneath the body.
  • Exploding boulders: Hitting a leg makes Gohma drop rocks that explode after a few seconds. Get clear of them or roll Yunobo through them.
  • Fresh legs: When Gohma stands back up, its legs are briefly invulnerable. Wait until all four are back before sending Yunobo again.

Yunobo becomes one of Link’s allies after the Fire Temple, and his roll is the key to the whole fight.

Phase 2: The Ceiling

At about half health, Gohma climbs onto the ceiling. Here’s how to bring it back down:

  • Step 5: Look up and find a leg. Center it on screen and send Yunobo. He rolls up the wall and across to hit it.
  • Step 6: Hit a leg and Gohma falls back to the floor.
  • Step 7: Use the same ramp trick: run up its body to the eye and attack until it starts to rise.
  • Step 8: Repeat until the health bar is empty.

Phase 2 adds bigger exploding boulders that it drops around you in a ring. Don’t panic: break out with Yunobo’s roll, climb over and glide away, or use Recall on a rock to push it back. Your call.

Rewards

  • Heart Container: Pick it up after the fight. It does not go into your inventory automatically.
  • Yunobo’s Vow: Talk to Yunobo after the cutscene. His spirit joins you, so you can use his rolling charge anywhere in Hyrule.
  • Quest progress: The Fire Temple is done, and the Death Mountain part of Regional Phenomena wraps up back in Goron City.

Oh, and Yunobo’s roll is great outside the temple too. It smashes ore deposits and rock walls, and it hits enemies hard.

Extra Tips

  • Pro Tip: Stamina matters. A spare stamina wheel makes the climb up Gohma’s body and any gliding much calmer.
  • Arrows work too: You can shoot the eye from the ground, but it is slow compared to melee on a downed Gohma.
  • Keep Yunobo close: His charge only works when he is beside you, so don’t sprint off across the arena without him.
  • Speed helps: A hasty elixir makes dodging stomps and reaching the ramp easier.
  • Don’t rush the eye: Two or three solid hits and a clean jump off beat five hits and a knockdown. Patience keeps your health bar full for phase 2.
