Recall is the ability that makes you feel like you’re cheating, and it’s completely legal. Rewind a boulder into the enemy who threw it, ride a falling chunk of sky island back up into the clouds, or turn a plank into an elevator.

If you’re still climbing every cliff by hand in Tears of the Kingdom, we need to talk. Let’s get into it.

How to Get Recall

Recall is the last of the four abilities you pick up on the Great Sky Island, and you can’t miss it.

  • Requirement: clear the first three shrines (Ukouh for Ultrahand, In-isa for Fuse, Gutanbac for Ascend).
  • Where: head back to the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island.
  • Who gives it: an echo of Princess Zelda grants you the power. Yes, the time power is hers. You’re borrowing it.
  • The test: right after, Rauru points you to a fourth shrine, Nachoyah, which is built entirely around Recall.

Reaching Nachoyah Shrine

Here’s the play, straight from Nintendo’s official beginner tips: fast travel to the Room of Awakening, move to the far left corner of the chamber and Ascend to the level above. Use Recall on the gear to send it the other way, ride across, and follow the passage to the shrine.

Inside, you rewind rafts, a water wheel and finally the hands of a dial: the gate shuts too fast, so the instant it opens, Recall the dial hands and walk through. Clear it and take the Light of Blessing back to the Temple of Time.

How Recall Works

Link aiming Recall at a rock thrown by an enemy, the rock glowing yellow with its path traced in the air
Rewind a thrown rock mid-flight and it heads straight back to the enemy who threw it.

Recall sends one object backward along the path it just traveled. Time doesn’t rewind. Only the object does, so you and every enemy keep moving normally.

  • Step 1: hold L to open your abilities and select Recall. Time stands still while you aim, so you can pick your target calmly, even in a fight.
  • Step 2: objects you can rewind are highlighted. Lock onto one that has moved recently.
  • Step 3: confirm, and the object starts replaying its movement in reverse. A trail shows the path it’s going to follow.
  • Step 4: you can end the rewind early to stop it where you want. Otherwise, it runs out on its own after a short time.

Stop Doing This: trying to Recall something that has been sitting still. No recent movement means nothing to rewind. Recall also doesn’t work on Link, enemies or other living things.

The Best Recall Tricks

Recall isn’t one trick. It’s a toolkit, and these are the plays that make it hit different.

Return to Sender

When an Octorok spits a rock at you, or an enemy hurls a boulder, Recall it mid-flight. The rock flies back along its path and smacks the thrower. Free damage, zero risk.

Ride the Falling Sky Rocks

Chunks of sky islands regularly fall to the surface. Run over, stand on top of one that just landed, and Recall it. It carries you back up the way it came, often high enough to glide over to a sky island. No Skyview Tower needed. Trust.

The Ultrahand Elevator

Grab a big flat object with Ultrahand, lift it as high as you can, then let go so it falls. Hop on and Recall it: it rises back to where you dropped it from. Stop the rewind at the top and you have a ledge in midair, which also makes a great Ascend target from below.

Undo Your Mistakes

Dropped a key item down a slope or knocked a ball off a shrine track? Recall puts it back. It’s the cleanest “oops” button in the game.

Recall Pro Tips

  • Use the freeze: time stops while you’re aiming, so take a breath and pick the right object instead of panic picking.
  • Act fast: Recall only remembers recent movement. Set up your trick, then use it right away.
  • Watch the trail: the preview path tells you exactly where the object will go before you commit.
  • Combo with Fuse: Recall a thrown rock back, then finish the stunned enemy with a Fuse weapon.
  • Rebuild your elevator: once you have Autobuild, an elevator platform is a few taps away anywhere.

Recall FAQ

Where do you get Recall in Tears of the Kingdom?

At the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island, after clearing the Ukouh, In-isa and Gutanbac Shrines. An echo of Zelda gives it to you.

Can you use Recall on enemies?

No. Recall only works on objects, but you can rewind the rocks and boulders enemies throw at you.

Why won’t Recall work on an object?

The object either hasn’t moved recently or isn’t a valid target. Recall only rewinds recent movement.

How do you ride falling rocks with Recall?

Stand on a sky rock that just fell to the ground and use Recall on it. It flies back up along its fall path with you on top.

GG: you know where to get it, how it works and the four tricks that matter. Now go launch yourself into the sky on a rock like a proper Hylian.
