Ever watched a massive dragon drift across the sky and wondered how to get its glowing parts? You’re not alone. Dragon parts are some of the best materials in Tears of the Kingdom, and getting them takes a little planning.

Here’s the full breakdown: where all four dragons fly, how to land on them, which parts each one drops and what those parts actually do. Everything is checked against the current version 1.4.3.

Where to Find Every Dragon in Tears of the Kingdom

Hyrule has four dragons: Dinraal (fire), Naydra (ice), Farosh (electricity) and the Light Dragon. The three elemental dragons fly fixed loops that are half on the Surface and half in the Depths. They burst out of one chasm, cross the sky, and dive into another. The Light Dragon never goes underground and circles the whole kingdom instead.

Your best bet is to camp the chasm where a dragon emerges. Every loop starts there, so you know exactly where it will appear. In the Depths, each elemental dragon flies a similar path back the other way.

Oh, and don’t count on a fixed schedule. Guides disagree on exact loop times, so the reliable move is to wait at the right chasm or on a nearby Skyview Tower and watch the sky.

Finding the Light Dragon

The Light Dragon is the odd one out. It flies clockwise around the edges of Hyrule, often higher than many of the Sky Islands, and a full loop takes well over an hour of real time. That makes it the hardest dragon to catch by chance.

  • The easy window: once you restore the Great Deku Tree in Korok Forest, the main quest for the Master Sword marks the Light Dragon’s position and it flies much lower. That lasts until you claim the sword, so farm it then.
  • After that: its altitude varies again. Launch from a Skyview Tower it passes near, or drop from a Sky Island above its path.

The Light Dragon is tied directly to the main story, so I’ll keep this spoiler-free. Pay attention to what Impa’s Dragon’s Tears questline reveals along the way.

How to Land on a Dragon and Farm Parts

Get above a dragon’s path, then dive and glide onto its back.

Dragons can’t be killed, but you can knock parts loose with arrows or melee hits. Unlike Breath of the Wild, you can land on their backs and work up close. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Step 1: Pick the dragon you need. Fire, ice, shock or light, think about what you want to fuse or cook.
  2. Step 2: Prep your protection. Flame Guard Lv2 for Dinraal, warm gear for Naydra’s mountains, and shock resistance with all metal gear removed for Farosh.
  3. Step 3: Get above its path. Use a Skyview Tower, a Sky Island or high ground near the chasm.
  4. Step 4: Glide onto its back from above. Once you’re on, you can walk along it and line up your target.
  5. Step 5: Hit the part you want. Each body part drops a specific material (see the table below).
  6. Step 6: Catch the drop. Parts knocked off the mouth or claws can fall away, so be ready to glide after them.
  7. Step 7: Wait about 10 real minutes before the next part breaks off.

Spike shards work differently. They sit at the base of the spikes on a dragon’s back, and you can simply pick them up while you walk along it. They don’t respawn while you stay near the dragon, so leave the area and come back later.

Every Dragon Part

Each dragon has five materials, which makes 20 in total.

(Pro tip: the claws and mouth are the trickiest. Shoot them with arrows from the dragon’s back or from the side as it passes, rather than trying to reach them on foot.)

What Dragon Parts Do

Dragon parts are worth the trouble because they work in two big ways.

  • Fusing: attach them to weapons, shields and arrows with Fuse for a big attack boost plus the dragon’s element. Spike shards are among the strongest fuse materials in the game.
  • Cooking: adding a dragon part to a meal guarantees a critical success. A dragon horn also sets the meal’s effect duration to 30 minutes, which is perfect for long buffs.
  • Elixirs: dragon parts don’t count as monster parts, so they won’t work as the monster ingredient in an elixir.

Our cooking and elixir guide shows how to build meals around a dragon horn.

Pro Tips for Faster Farming

  • Camp the chasm: waiting where a dragon emerges beats chasing it across the map.
  • Bring a bow: arrows let you knock parts loose even if you miss the landing.
  • Farm in rounds: grab one part, then use the 10 minute wait to cook, fuse or explore before you come back.
  • Use height: Skyview Towers and Sky Islands save a lot of climbing. Our Ascend guide covers more ways to gain altitude fast.
  • Strip for Farosh: unequip metal weapons, shields and bows before you land, or you’re asking for a shock.

Dragon FAQ

How many dragons are in Tears of the Kingdom?

Four: Dinraal, Naydra, Farosh and the Light Dragon. Each drops five different materials.

Where do the dragons spawn?

Dinraal comes out of the East Akkala Plains Chasm, Naydra from the Naydra Snowfield Chasm and Farosh from the East Gerudo Chasm. The Light Dragon circles Hyrule’s outskirts without landing.

How often can you farm dragon parts?

About one part every 10 real minutes per dragon. Spike shards respawn once you leave the area.

How do you find the Light Dragon?

Restore the Great Deku Tree in Korok Forest. During the Master Sword quest that follows, the Light Dragon’s position is marked and it flies lower.

Do dragon parts guarantee a critical cook?

Yes. Any dragon part guarantees a critical success, and a dragon horn sets the effect duration to 30 minutes.

Dragon farming rewards patience and good planning. Once you know where each loop starts, it becomes a reliable way to power up your weapons and meals. So which element are you chasing first? Grab your bow and head to the chasm.
