There’s a moment in Tears of the Kingdom that stops a lot of players mid-stride. A huge, burning dragon drifts across the northern sky like it has all the time in the world. That’s Dinraal, the fire dragon, and yes, you can land on it.
If you’ve been wondering where Dinraal flies, how to survive the heat, and what you can collect from it, you’re in the right place. There’s no wrong way to approach this, so take it at your own pace. Everything below is checked against the current version 1.4.3.
Where to Find Dinraal in Tears of the Kingdom
Dinraal flies a fixed loop across northern Hyrule, and it’s there from the start of your adventure. No quest or story progress is needed. It is never killed and never despawns: if you can’t see it above ground, it’s flying through the Depths.
Here’s your checklist:
- Compendium: Dinraal is entry #188 in the Hyrule Compendium. Snap a photo the first time you see it.
- Where it emerges: the East Akkala Plains Chasm in eastern Akkala.
- Surface route: it curves around the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab, follows the northeast and northern coasts, rises briefly over Skull Lake, then keeps heading west along the top of the map.
- Where it dives: the Drenan Highlands Chasm, where it drops back into the Depths.
- Depths route: underground it flies a very similar path in the opposite direction, then resurfaces in Akkala to start again.
- Lap time: about 50 minutes of real time for a full loop.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Element | Fire |
| Region | Northern Hyrule: Akkala to the northern coast |
| Surface exit | East Akkala Plains Chasm |
| Surface entry | Drenan Highlands Chasm |
| Full loop | About 50 real minutes |
| Protection | Flame Guard Lv2 |
| Materials | 5 (Scale, Claw, Horn, Fang shard, Spike shard) |
This is one of those moments worth slowing down for. Instead of fighting the schedule, treat the wait as a scenic break. Watching a fire dragon cross the sky is half the fun.
How to Land on Dinraal: Step by Step
Riding a dragon sounds intimidating, but it’s very doable with a little prep. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
- Get your fire protection first. Dinraal is always covered in flames, and you need Flame Guard Lv2 to get close. More on how to get it below.
- Pick a high lookout. Unlock the Skyview Towers in Akkala and northern Hyrule. Launching from a tower gives you height and a wide view of the sky.
- Wait near the chasm. The East Akkala Plains Chasm is the most reliable spot, since every lap starts there. Stand on high ground nearby and watch for the glow.
- Glide in from above. Get higher than the dragon, open your paraglider and steer onto its back. Coming in from above and slightly behind is the easiest approach.
- Collect and hop off. Grab what you need, then glide away before it dives into a chasm.

Flame Guard: Armor or Elixir
- Flamebreaker Armor: sold in Goron City. Each piece gives Flame Guard, and the full set upgraded twice at a Great Fairy unlocks the Fireproof set bonus, which stops you from catching fire.
- Fireproof Elixir: cook Fireproof Lizards or Smotherwing Butterflies with a monster part. More critters and better monster parts give a stronger, longer effect. Check that the elixir says Lv2 before you rely on it.
- Timing: drink your elixir before you launch, not mid-air. Once you’re on that burning back you won’t want to fumble in menus.
Our cooking and elixir guide explains how elixir levels work if you’d rather brew your own.
Dinraal Materials and How to Get Them
Dinraal drops five different materials, and each one comes from a specific part of its body. Shoot or strike that part and the material breaks off.
| Material | Where to hit | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Dinraal’s Scale | Anywhere on the body | The easiest drop, even from the ground |
| Dinraal’s Claw | The hands | Shoot with arrows; hard to reach up close |
| Shard of Dinraal’s Fang | The mouth | Arrows from the side work best |
| Dinraal’s Horn | The horns on its head | Easiest while standing on its back |
| Shard of Dinraal’s Spike | The spikes on its back | Can be picked up while you walk along its back |
Completionists, you’ll want to know: you can only break off one material roughly every 10 real-time minutes. Spike shards also won’t come back while you’re still near the dragon, so move on and return later. Plan for one material per pass and enjoy the ride.
- Bring a bow: the hands and mouth are awkward to hit from its back. Stock up on arrows before you go.
- Grab drops quickly: materials knocked off the mouth or hands fall to the ground if you don’t catch them, so be ready to glide down after them.
- Fuse them: Dinraal parts are powerful fire materials. Our Fuse guide shows what they do on weapons and arrows.

Lore Connection: Why Dinraal Matters
Lore Connection: Dinraal is one of three elemental dragons, alongside Naydra (ice) and Farosh (electricity). Their names echo Hyrule’s three goddesses: Din, Nayru and Farore. Dinraal carries Din’s name, the goddess of power, and it has long been linked to the Spring of Power.
Tears of the Kingdom adds a fourth dragon, the Light Dragon, which ties directly into the main story. This random detail actually connects to everything: the skills you learn landing on Dinraal, like timing your glide and managing protection, are exactly what you’ll use later.
