Your job in this shrine is to babysit an ice cube through a gauntlet of fire. The devs built a puzzle where the goal is to keep a frozen block from becoming a puddle. It’s petty and it’s brilliant.
I tested this so you don’t have to. Here’s the cleanest route, plus a few tricks that make the fire obstacles trivial.
Kuh Takkar Shrine Location and Overview
Before the puzzle, you have to get inside. The whole shrine is entombed in ice when you arrive.
- Location: Eastern Gerudo Highlands, at the base of Laparoh Mesa, just northeast of the Yiga Hideout.
- Trial Name: Melting Ice Hazard.
- The Problem: The entrance is completely frozen over. You can’t walk in until you thaw it.
- The Fix: Fire arrows, a fire-based weapon, or a few campfires lit next to the ice (flint and wood) will do it. Bombs can chip away at it too.
- The Goal: Carry a block of ice past every fire hazard to the altar at the end, where Monk Kuh Takkar waits.
- Tools You Need: Magnesis. That’s the whole toolkit, and the shrine is built around it.
(Pro tip: Fire arrows are the fastest way to thaw the entrance. If you’re out, light a campfire right against the ice and wait.)
Kuh Takkar Shrine Walkthrough: Step by Step

For the tech nerds: the ice block shrinks when it touches or gets too close to fire. Distance matters, and so does how long it’s exposed. Every step below comes down to minimizing that exposure.
- Step 1: Thaw the entrance and walk inside. A block of ice is sitting on the floor in front of you. Don’t lose it.
- Step 2: Grab the chest first. Push the ice block into the small hole to the right, climb on top of it, and hop into the small cut-out area. The chest holds a Frostblade.
- Step 3: Pull the ice block back out and head up the stairs. Weave through the first three columns of fire, keeping your distance so the ice doesn’t melt.
- Step 4: Handle the rotating fire. Time your walk for when it swings past. Throwing the ice past it is safer than running, and it won’t damage the block.
- Step 5: Around the bend is a horizontal row of fire. Stand back and toss the ice beneath the flames. It slides under without melting. Walk to the other side and pick it back up.
- Step 6: Next is a metal block sitting in a pool of lava. Use Magnesis to pull it toward you, then toss the ice across the gap.
- Step 7: Cross, then use Magnesis to lift the metal block out of the lava. Park it so it blocks the horizontal rows of fire, grab the ice, and walk past.
- Step 8: The final hazard is fire shooting down from above. It seems counterintuitive, but toss the ice straight through. It’s big enough that it only melts a bit.
- Step 9: Go back and Magnesis the metal block. Hold it over your head and walk under the flames.
- Step 10: Pick up the ice one last time and carry it to the top. The vertical bars lift, and Kuh Takkar takes it from there.
Exploit Alert: The metal block works as a shield, a bridge, and a fire blocker. One object solves three problems. This shouldn’t feel this clever, but it does.
Patched? Nothing here is an exploit in the glitchy sense. It’s all intended design, so it works the same on every version I’ve seen.
Rewards and Benefits

- Frostblade: The chest weapon, and a fitting prize for a shrine about ice.
- Spirit Orb: Monk Kuh Takkar grants one when you deliver the ice. Collect four and trade them for a heart container or stamina.
- Magnesis Mastery: The shrine drills your block placement, which pays off in later puzzles.
Pro Tips
- Skip the Firebreaker Armor: It will NOT protect you here. Use the metal block overhead instead.
- Throw, Don’t Carry: When in doubt, toss the ice past the hazard and walk through on your own. It’s the lowest-risk move in the room.
- Use Diagonal Placement: Some guides angle the metal block across the lava, which makes a stable crossing. Experiment with the angle that feels best.
- Check the Chest Route: Guides disagree on how to reach the chest. Another popular route uses Magnesis to place the metal block and paraglides to the chest. Use whichever suits you.
- Keep Your Distance: Frozen ice melts faster the closer it gets to flames. Stay back whenever you can.
- Reload If Needed: Lose the block completely? Leave and re-enter the shrine to reset it.
(Pro tip: If the ice shrinks a lot, don’t panic. It only needs to survive until the altar, not look pretty.)
Why This Shrine Matters
Kuh Takkar is a great lesson in thinking with your tools. Fire is the enemy, Magnesis is the answer, and the solution works because you look at each object differently. The metal block is the star here.
It’s also a quick win, with a Frostblade and a Spirit Orb waiting at the end. Frame-perfect? No. Worth it? Absolutely.
