You walk into Makasura Shrine and find… a mostly empty room. No switch, no device, nothing obvious to grab. Don’t worry, that’s the first lesson. This trial is called An Upright Device, and the whole thing is built around one Zonai gadget: the Stabilizer.

Here’s how to reach the shrine above Kakariko Village, solve every room, grab the Fairy Tonic chest and walk out with your Light of Blessing.

Makasura Shrine Location

Makasura Shrine sits on the high ground just south of Kakariko Village in West Necluda, on the Surface. It overlooks the village from the ridge behind the Chief’s house, so it doubles as a very handy fast travel point for Kakariko.

  • Region: West Necluda (Surface), above Kakariko Village.
  • Coordinates: about 1770, -1050, 0166.
  • Trial name: An Upright Device.
  • Abilities used: Ascend and Ultrahand, plus at least one arrow.
  • Treasure: one chest (Fairy Tonic) and the Light of Blessing.

How to Climb Up to It

You can free climb the cliff, but there’s a faster way. Wooden scaffolding runs up the cliff wall near the village entrance. Stand under the first platform, use Ascend to pop up through it, and repeat until you reach the top.

(Pro tip: if your stamina wheel is still small, the scaffolding route costs you zero stamina. Climbing the rock face can leave you hanging halfway in the rain.)

The Stabilizer in 30 Seconds

The shrine’s title says “Upright Device”, and the device in question is the Stabilizer. Strike it (with a weapon or an arrow) and it switches on, then rights itself so its bottom faces down no matter how it’s been rotated. Strike it again to switch it off.

That self-righting flip is the whole trick. If the Stabilizer is attached to the end of a long metal piece, the flip swings that piece up hard, which means anything standing on it (a ball, or you) gets flung.

Makasura Shrine Walkthrough

Here’s the full breakdown, room by room.

Step 1: Ascend Out of the First Room

Walk forward to the wall with a ledge above it. Stand underneath and use Ascend to rise straight up through it. That’s the “empty room” solved.

Step 2: Launch Across the First Gap

Turn left and you’ll see two Stabilizers, one of them attached to an L-shaped metal piece. Grab that piece with Ultrahand and rotate it so the Stabilizer’s bottom faces the big gap.

  • The launch: stand on the far end of the metal piece and strike the Stabilizer (an arrow works best). The flip catapults you across.
  • The backup: switch the Stabilizer on so the piece stands upright, Ascend through it from below, then glide across from the top.

Step 3: Climb Over the Fence

On the middle platform, grab the second L-shaped piece and set it down in front of the tall barred fence. Switch its Stabilizer on and the whole thing stands up like a wall. Ascend or climb it and drop over the fence into the enclosure.

Step 4: Grab the Chest

Inside the enclosure there’s a metal plate with a bowl. Attach a Stabilizer to it, turn it away from the bars and point the base toward the back wall. Stand in the bowl, strike the Stabilizer and you’ll land on the ledge with the chest. Open it for a Fairy Tonic.

Step 5: Fling the Sphere Over the Fence

Drop back down and turn the bowl plate to face the middle of the shrine. Put the shrine sphere in the bowl, aim, and strike the Stabilizer to send the sphere over the fence onto the main platform. Launch yourself back out the same way.

Roll or carry the sphere into its socket. The bars on the right drop and reveal another metal plate with a bowl. Nailed it? Two steps to go.

Slotting the shrine sphere into its socket lowers the bars and reveals the last bowl plate.

Step 6: Build the Final Catapult

Drag the new bowl plate to the middle. Strike the left Stabilizer to switch it off, then carry it and its L-shaped piece to the far ledge, with the Stabilizer facing the final chamber. Attach the bowl plate to that combo with the bowl facing up.

Step 7: Launch to the Altar

Stand in the bowl and strike the contraption. You’ll fly across the final gap; glide the last bit onto the altar platform, climb the stairs and claim your Light of Blessing.

Oh, and don’t mix up the Fairy Tonic with a real fairy. The tonic is a strong healing elixir you drink yourself; it does not revive you automatically the way a fairy in your pouch does. Our guide to cooking meals and crafting elixirs covers the difference.

Pro Tips for Makasura Shrine

  • Look up first: any time a shrine room looks empty, check the ceiling. Ascend is the answer more often than you’d think.
  • Arrows are your friend: striking a Stabilizer from range means you’re already standing in the right spot when it flips.
  • Aim before you strike: a small rotation of the plate changes the whole arc. Line the bowl up with your target first.
  • Misses are free: a missed launch only costs time. Set the plate up again and have another go.
  • Glide the last stretch: on the final launch, open your paraglider once you’re clearly above the altar side.

Makasura Shrine FAQ

Where is Makasura Shrine in Tears of the Kingdom?

On the ridge just south of Kakariko Village in West Necluda, at roughly 1770, -1050, 0166. Use the cliff scaffolding and Ascend to reach it quickly.

What is in the Makasura Shrine chest?

A Fairy Tonic. The chest sits on a ledge inside the fenced enclosure, and you reach it by launching yourself from the bowl plate.

What is the upright device in Makasura Shrine?

The Stabilizer. When you strike it, it switches on and flips itself so its bottom faces down, which lets you stand pieces up or catapult things.

Do I need arrows for Makasura Shrine?

One is enough, and you can usually get by with melee strikes. Arrows just let you trigger a Stabilizer while standing on the launch end.

Your best bet next: Kakariko is a great base, so warp back here whenever you need supplies. Then pick a direction and keep hunting shrines (and seeds, with our Korok seed locations guide). More Lights of Blessing means more hearts, and that’s when you’re winning!
