The Lightning Temple is the Gerudo dungeon of Tears of the Kingdom, a buried pyramid full of light puzzles, Gibdo and one very angry queen. You tackle it with Riju at your side, and her lightning is both your key and your best weapon. There’s no wrong way to approach this, so let’s take it one room at a time.
This guide covers how to raise the temple from the sand, the route through every major room, all four batteries, the Queen Gibdo fight and every chest. Skim the headings if you would rather discover a room yourself.
Before You Go: Raising the Temple
The temple belongs to the main quest Riju of Gerudo Town, the Gerudo part of the Regional Phenomena. It starts in Gerudo Town, where Riju links the strange sounds in the sandstorm to a mural in the town’s underground shelter.
- Find the towers: get high (Ascend works well from the town’s rooftops) and look southwest for tall pillared towers in the desert.
- Tower 1: break the rock covering the platform on the nearest tower to release a beam of light.
- Tower 2: follow the beam west. Turn the wheel here to raise the tower so the light bounces onward.
- Tower 3: rebuild the broken lever with Ultrahand (or attach a Stake to the wheel) and turn it to complete a triangle of light.
- Raise it: a stone rises in the middle of the triangle. Charge Riju’s lightning, shoot it into the stone, and the temple rises out of the sand.
Checklist: pack healing food, plenty of arrows, and some heat protection for the desert days. Elemental fruit is handy too, but Riju’s lightning does most of the work against Gibdo.

The Entrance and the First Queen Gibdo Fight
A purple hive blocks the entrance. Fire a lightning arrow at it (stand near Riju, charge her ability, then shoot) and Queen Gibdo bursts out for a first round.
- Hit her with lightning: she turns white and becomes vulnerable to normal attacks.
- Do not worry about finishing her: she retreats after taking some damage. The real fight is at the top of the temple.
- Clear the way: one more lightning arrow on the purple bulge opens the entrance.
Lightning Temple Walkthrough
Lower Floors
- Entry room: blow sand away with a fan or Korok Frond. A mound in the middle hides a raised floor tile, and another sand pile right of the pillars hides a chest.
- The bridges: in the basement, drop off the side of the bridges to find a chest on the level below.
- Trap rooms: fire jets and rolling boulders guard the corridors. Time your runs past the flames, and use Recall to freeze a boulder in place.
- Riju and tiles: stand on raised tiles so Riju can follow you, and some gates open only when you both do your part.
- Hidden gear: lift stone slabs with Ultrahand to find Gerudo weapons stashed underneath.
Room of Hopeful Light
A Captain Construct III ambushes you here. Beat it, then move the light reflector under the central pillar of sunlight so the beam hits the circular mechanism on the wall. That opens the path upward. Loose bricks nearby lead to a side room with a chest.
Room of Ascension: The Four Batteries
The central chamber holds an elevator to the top floor. It only works once you charge four batteries around the temple with lightning arrows. You can do them in any order.
| Battery | How to reach it | Main trick |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Loose bricks on a wall | Move the bricks with Ultrahand, then shoot the battery |
| 2 | Updraft and glide, then the Room of Light and Shade | Sync two rotating wheels with Recall, stop the room with Stakes, aim mirrors |
| 3 | Room of Natural Light and Room of Offered Light | Stack a mirror on a brick under the light, then clear a Gibdo nest and reflect light to a high target |
| 4 | Past rows of flame jets | Glide through the fire gaps, charge the last battery |
Take Your Time: every light puzzle follows the same rule. Find the beam of sunlight, put something shiny in it, and point it at the green target. If a room is not clicking, step back and trace where the light actually falls.

Boss: Queen Gibdo
The elevator carries you to the seventh floor, the Room of Glorious Light, for the rematch.
- Phase 1: hit her with lightning arrows to turn her white, then attack with your best weapon. Enough hits while she is white knock her down for big damage. Watch for her charge, sand beam, dive attack and three tornadoes, which can interrupt Riju.
- Phase 2 (half health): she wakes Gibdo nests around the arena. Destroy them quickly. Broken nests open pillars of light, and Gibdo caught in the light are stuck and take damage. She now throws five tornadoes.
- Optional trick: a mirror type shield can help bounce light in phase 2.

Fused weapons make the white windows count. The Fuse guide covers easy damage boosts.
Rewards and Chests
Completionists, you’ll want to know: the temple has six chests.
| Where | Contents |
|---|---|
| Entry room, under sand right of the pillars | Flame Emitter |
| Below the basement bridges | Large Zonai Charge |
| Square room guarded by Gibdo | Topaz |
| Side room by the rotating wheel | Mighty Zonaite Shield |
| Side room off the Room of Hopeful Light | Mighty Construct Bow |
| Small room before the fourth battery | Diamond |
- Heart Container: from Queen Gibdo.
- Riju’s Vow: Riju becomes the Sage of Lightning and her avatar can follow you anywhere.
- Story: a memory scene about the Imprisoning War.
Lore Connection: this random detail actually connects to the bigger story. The temple only rises because you and Riju work together, and the vision afterward ties the Gerudo sage of the past to Riju in the present.
Lightning Temple FAQ
How do you raise the Lightning Temple?
Light the three desert towers southwest of Gerudo Town to form a triangle of light, then shoot Riju’s lightning into the stone that rises in the middle.
How many batteries are in the Lightning Temple?
Four. Charge each with a lightning arrow to power the elevator to the boss floor.
How do you beat Queen Gibdo?
Hit her with Riju’s lightning to turn her white, then attack. In phase 2, destroy the Gibdo nests quickly.
What do you get for the Lightning Temple?
A Heart Container, Riju’s Vow (her lightning on demand) and six chests including a Diamond.
Take Your Time: the Lightning Temple rewards patience more than reflexes. Trace the light, check every corner for chests, and let Riju handle the Gibdo. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the view from the top is worth it.
