Ever walked past a canyon full of creepy statues and wondered why nothing happened? That’s the Kam Urog Shrine hiding in plain sight, and you can’t just stumble into it. Here’s exactly what to do, from the quest start to the Spirit Orb.

Quick beginner note: a Shrine in Breath of the Wild is a mini-dungeon with a puzzle or challenge. Finishing one gets you a Spirit Orb, which you trade for more hearts or stamina.

Kam Urog Shrine Location and Overview

Kam Urog Shrine sits just past Fort Hateno in the Hateno Region. It stays hidden until you finish a short side quest called The Cursed Statue. Here’s what you need to know first.

  • Region: East Necluda (Hateno Tower region), in a canyon northeast of Fort Hateno.
  • Trial Name: Trial of Passage.
  • Quest Required: The Cursed Statue Shrine Quest. The shrine will not appear without it.
  • Quest Giver: Doctor Calip, who lives in a cabin on the east side of Fort Hateno.
  • Time Requirement: Night. You’ll need to be in the canyon around 9:00 PM.
  • Key Tool: Any bow and a single arrow.
  • Helpful Rune: Stasis, for the clockwork puzzle inside.

If you’re new to this, the Stasis Rune is the ability that freezes an object in time. You’ll get it early in the game, and it makes this shrine much easier.

Lore-wise, Calip is a researcher who’s been working through an ancient text. Hyrule is full of people piecing together the past, and this quest is one of the quieter examples.

Step-by-Step: Reveal and Solve Kam Urog Shrine

Part 1: The Cursed Statue Quest

  • Step 1: Head to Doctor Calip’s cabin on the east side of Fort Hateno. Talk to him to start the quest.
  • Step 2: If Calip isn’t home, sleep in his bed until morning and he’ll appear. He leaves the house at about 6:05 a.m.
  • Step 3: Listen to his talk about the ancient text, then follow him to his field work site.
  • Step 4: Go up the path into the canyon on the left. You’ll find an area full of statues.

Calip’s riddle sounds far more complicated than the real answer. The solution is simply to wait for night.

  • Step 5: Wait until nighttime, around 9:00 PM. You can pass time by standing around, or by building a campfire with wood and flint and choosing to wait until night.
  • Step 6: One statue’s eyes will start glowing. Shoot it with an arrow.
  • Step 7: The Kam Urog Shrine rises out of the ground. Walk in.

(Pro tip: The campfire trick is much faster than waiting in real time. Gather your wood, strike the flint, and skip straight to night.)

Part 2: Solving the Shrine Puzzle

Inside, you’ll see a huge circular device below you. It spins like clockwork, dragging spiked balls and platforms along with it. Think of it as a giant rotating drum, and your job is to ride it to the top.

  • Step 1: Run down the ramp and enter the opening of the spinning room. Stay clear of the spiked balls.
  • Step 2: Make your way toward the middle of the drum. Let the first large platform catch you and carry you up and around.
  • Step 3: Stay on the platform and avoid the big spiked ball. When the platform is nearly horizontal, run to its end.
  • Step 4: Jump to the gear in the middle once the platform lines up with it. You’ll ride along for a moment.
  • Step 5: Wait for another platform to become horizontal on the far side. Jump over to the next gear, which leads upward.
  • Step 6: Near the top, wait for the shorter platform that forms a staircase. Run up it.
  • Step 7: Speak to Monk Kam Urog at the top to collect your Spirit Orb.

If you’re struggling with the timing, use the Stasis Rune. Freeze the gears or platforms and walk through without worry.

There’s a shortcut. Glide over to the side opposite the entrance and land on a platform that’s actually part of a staircase. One section of the stairs is missing, so wait for the spinning platforms to complete it, then run up to the monk.

Rewards and Hidden Treasure

The Spirit Orb is the main prize, but this shrine also hides two chests. Both are worth grabbing before you finish.

RewardWhere to Find It
Spirit OrbMonk Kam Urog at the top of the room
Soldier’s SpearChest on a small moving platform
OpalChest outside the drum, reached by gliding down
  • Soldier’s Spear: Wait for a small platform carrying a chest to pass. Hop on when it’s about horizontal and walk around it until you and the chest are upright. One guide notes this spear comes with a long throw upgrade.
  • Opal: Jump from the end of a platform toward the opening back outside the device, or hop off the chest platform and paraglide down underneath your destination. The chest holding the Opal is there.
  • Spirit Orb: Collect it from Monk Kam Urog once you reach the top.

If you’re new to this, an Opal is a gem you can sell for rupees. It’s a handy little bonus for such a short shrine.

Pro Tips for a Smooth Run

  • Pro Tip 1: Use Stasis early. Freezing a platform at the right angle turns a tricky jump into an easy walk.
  • Pro Tip 2: Watch the platform angles, not the spiked balls. Most of your timing comes from waiting until a platform is horizontal.
  • Pro Tip 3: Grab the chests first. Both are easy to reach while the drum is still turning, and you won’t have to come back.
  • Pro Tip 4: Use your paraglider. Gliding down under the staircase is the quickest way to reach the Opal chest.
  • Pro Tip 5: Don’t rush. The drum repeats its pattern, so you can always wait for the next pass.
  • Pro Tip 6: Bring a few spare arrows. You only need one for the statue, but extras help if you miss.

The data speaks for itself: this shrine has just two real steps, reveal it and ride the drum. Most of the difficulty comes from timing, not from any complex mechanic.

Why Kam Urog Shrine Matters

This shrine is a nice reminder that Breath of the Wild rewards patience and observation. The hardest part of the quest is realizing that the answer is simply to wait for night.

Inside, the clockwork puzzle teaches a useful lesson about reading moving platforms. Those skills pay off in later shrines and across the rest of Hyrule.

Lore-wise, hidden shrines like this one make Hyrule feel like it’s full of secrets waiting to be found. A canyon of statues looks like scenery until you come back after dark.

Did you figure out Calip’s riddle on your own, or did you have to look it up? And did you take the stairs or glide straight to the top? Tell us in the comments!
