Hogwarts Legacy hands you a quest log that fills up faster than you can empty it. Professors give you assignments, classmates pull you into their personal storylines, and half the people in Hogsmeade seem to have lost something in the Highlands.
There’s no wrong way to approach this. This guide explains every quest type, how many side quests there are, how to find the ones you are missing and which rewards actually matter.
Quest Types at a Glance
| Type | Who gives it | Main reward | Counts as a side quest? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main quests | The story | Story progress | No |
| Assignments | Professors | New spells | No |
| Relationship quests | Sebastian, Natsai (Natty) and Poppy | Story, gear, companion arcs | No |
| Side quests | Students and villagers | Gear, gold, cosmetics, XP | Yes |
Main Quests
These carry the story about ancient magic and Ranrok’s rebellion. They are added to your log automatically, and many of them are gated behind spells you only get from assignments.
Assignments
Professors set assignments once you reach certain points in the story, usually tasks like casting a set of spells in combat or brewing a potion. Completing one teaches you a new spell. Several main quests require those spells, so assignments are the one optional-looking category you should not ignore.
Relationship Quests
Your three closest friends each have a personal questline that unlocks in chapters as the story moves forward.
- Sebastian Sallow: the “In the Shadow of…” chain, about his sister Anne and the darker side of magic. It is the longest of the three and has real consequences for how his story ends.
- Natsai Onai (Natty): her questline starts with The Lost Child and pulls you into the trouble dark wizards and poachers are causing around the Highlands.
- Poppy Sweeting: a beast lover’s storyline that pits you against the poachers hunting magical creatures.
Good to know: relationship chapters are not missable, they just unlock after certain main quests. If one seems stuck, push the story forward and come back.
Side Quests
Side quests are handed out by students in the castle, residents in Hogsmeade and travelers in the Highlands. Most are short, some are surprisingly memorable, and they are where most of your gear and cosmetic rewards come from.

How Many Side Quests Are There?
The base game has 57 side quests. A 58th, the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest (in game it is called Minding Your Own Business), started as a PlayStation exclusive and arrived on every platform in the free Summer Update on June 6, 2024, which also added photo mode. Finish it and you get your own shop in Hogsmeade to sell your spare gear.
Completionists, you’ll want to know: relationship quests and assignments do not count toward the side quest total, so your side quest tally will look lower than your quest log suggests.
How to Find Every Quest
Side quests rarely announce themselves. Here’s your checklist:
- Watch for quest icons: characters with something for you show a quest marker, and available quests appear as icons on the map.
- Talk to everyone: students in corridors and villagers in Hogsmeade start a lot of quests just by chatting.
- Clear one area at a time: the castle first, then Hogsmeade, then the Highlands. It keeps the log tidy and the trips short.
- Check after story beats: new quests unlock as the main story moves on, so revisit areas after big missions.
- Use the tabs: the quest log splits main, assignments, relationships and side quests. A quest you think is missing is often sitting in another tab.
- Audit the completed list: it is not in story order, so if you are one short, go through it line by line.

Rewards and Why They Matter
- Spells: assignments give you spells, and spells unlock both main quests and exploration puzzles.
- Gear and cosmetics: side quests hand out clothing with better stats and unique looks.
- Gold and XP: steady income for seeds, potions and gear, plus XP toward your next talent point.
- The Hogsmeade shop: The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop gives you a permanent place to sell excess gear.
- Story: relationship quests give your friends real arcs, and Sebastian’s chain changes how his story ends.
Take Your Time: alternate a main quest with a couple of side quests. The pacing stays relaxed and your gear keeps up with the difficulty.
Tips for Completionists
- Don’t sit on assignments: visiting professors early saves you from a main quest stalling because you lack a spell.
- Play the relationship quests in order: each chapter builds on the last, and Sebastian’s in particular hits harder when you follow it as it unlocks.
- Hogsmeade first: it is dense with quest givers and close to the castle.
- Expect a messy log: completed quests are not listed in story order, so do not panic when it looks jumbled.

Hogwarts Legacy Quests FAQ
How many side quests are in Hogwarts Legacy?
58 on every platform: 57 from launch plus The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop, which left PlayStation exclusivity on June 6, 2024.
Do relationship quests count as side quests?
No. Sebastian’s, Natsai’s and Poppy’s quests are tracked separately, as are professor assignments.
Can you miss quests in Hogwarts Legacy?
Most quests stay available after the story ends, but some unlock only after specific main quests, so keep checking back.
Why are assignments important?
They teach you new spells, and several main quests require those spells before you can continue.
Checklist: assignments first, relationship chapters as they unlock, side quests one area at a time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the castle is a lovely place to take it slow.
