Victor Rookwood is the dark wizard who has been pulling strings beside Ranrok for most of the story, and in the main quest Wand Mastery he finally stops sending henchmen and comes for you himself. The fight is mandatory, it throws a lot of enemies at you at once, and his shield does not play by the usual colour rules.
Here’s how to prepare, how the fight unfolds, and how to break that shield without burning through your potions.

Prep Before You Start Wand Mastery
Once the ambush begins you cannot leave to restock, so sort everything out first. Your best bet is to treat it like a dungeon run.
- Potions: Wiggenweld for healing, Maxima for extra damage, Edurus for extra defence. Grab several of each.
- Combat plants: Mandrakes stun groups, Chinese Chomping Cabbage soaks attention, Venomous Tentacula deals steady damage. All three are great against crowds.
- Talents: spend any unspent points first. Anything that improves healing potions or Ancient Magic pays off here.
- Gear: equip your best defence pieces. Being outnumbered is the main danger, not Rookwood’s damage.
(Pro tip: if you have learned the Unforgivable Curses, slot them on a spell set. They hit hard and help clear the henchmen quickly.)
Step by Step: How to Defeat Victor Rookwood
- Get ambushed. Head through the quest to Ollivanders. When you step back outside, Rookwood springs his trap and you are pulled into an arena.
- Clear the first wave. Dark wizards pour in. Fight them like normal enemies, use the throwable objects around the arena, and keep moving.
- Save your Ancient Magic. Fill the meter on the henchmen, but hold it. You will want it for Rookwood’s shield.
- Win the first wand duel. After enough henchmen fall, Rookwood appears and locks wands with you as he casts Avada Kedavra. Mash the button shown on screen until your beam wins.
- Focus Rookwood. He joins the fight, and more dark wizards keep arriving. The waves do not stop until Rookwood goes down, so make him your priority.
- Break his shield. Use Ancient Magic, an Ancient Magic Throw or Stupefy to drop his Protego.
- Punish the opening. Unload your strongest spells while the shield is down. When it comes back, refill Ancient Magic on the henchmen and repeat.
- Finish the last duel. Bring his health down and he forces one more wand lock. Mash the prompt again to end the fight. Nailed it? Head back to the Map Chamber and talk to Professor Fig to keep the story moving.

How to Break Rookwood’s Shield
Most enemy shields in Hogwarts Legacy are colour coded, and you break them with a matching spell type. Rookwood’s shield is the exception, which is why so many players get stuck here.
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Ancient Magic | The most reliable option. Refill it by fighting the henchmen. |
| Ancient Magic Throw | Grab an object and hurl it at him. Great when your spells are on cooldown. |
| Stupefy | Free to use and always available, so it is your fallback when the meter is empty. |
Pro Tips
- Keep moving: standing still against a crowd is the fastest way to lose half your health.
- Watch the prompts: dodge and parry indicators matter more than usual, since several wizards can target you at once.
- Use Transformation: turning a henchman into an object takes it out of the fight and leaves fewer wands pointed at you.
- Drink Maxima on the break: time your damage potion for the moment his shield drops.
- Mash early: in both wand duels, start tapping the moment the prompt appears.
Still Stuck? Check Your Difficulty
There is no shame in it: Hogwarts Legacy lets you change difficulty from the settings menu at any time, even mid quest. Dropping a level for this one fight and raising it again afterwards costs you nothing. Your call.
If you would rather stay on Hard, the fix is almost always the same: you are using Ancient Magic on henchmen instead of saving it, or you are standing still while four wizards line up shots. Slow down, play the room, and let Rookwood come to you.
Lore Note: Victor is a distant descendant of Charles Rookwood, one of the four Keepers whose trials you complete during the story. It is a nice bit of tension that one of the people who protected ancient magic shares a bloodline with the man trying to steal it.
