Okay, so you’ve just stepped into Hogwarts Legacy and the castle is way bigger than you imagined… honestly, that’s the best problem to have. There’s a lot going on, but you don’t need to learn it all at once.

Let’s walk through this together. These are the habits and little tricks that make your first hours smoother, no matter which platform you’re playing on.

The Big Picture Before You Wander

Hogwarts Legacy rewards curiosity. The castle, Hogsmeade and the Highlands are packed with chests, puzzles and secrets, so poke into corners and don’t stress about finding everything on the first pass.

  • Story first, sightseeing second: early main quests teach your core spells and open new areas. A few hours of story makes exploring much easier.
  • Your House matters a little: it decides your common room and some dialogue with housemates, plus one House specific quest. It doesn’t lock you out of spells or areas.
  • Gear space is tight: you start with 20 gear slots, and chests are everywhere.
  • Loot needs picking up: enemy drops aren’t collected automatically, so walk over and grab them.

Your First Hours, Step by Step

Treat this like a friendly checklist. No pressure to follow it in exact order.

  1. Pick your House with a little thought. It’s a fan moment, but it does shape your common room and a few conversations.
  2. Push through the early story. Spells like Accio, Incendio and Levioso come from classes and quests, and you’ll want them for puzzles.
  3. Cast Revelio constantly. It’s free and it highlights loot containers in yellow and puzzles or interactable objects in blue. It’s also how you spot Field Guide Pages.
  4. Grab Field Guide Pages. They’re quick XP, which helps when a quest or piece of gear has a level requirement.
  5. Check your gear when you level up. New drops tend to keep pace with your level, so that robe from an hour ago may already be outdated.
  6. Clean out your inventory often. Sell or destroy pieces you’ve outgrown so your slots never fill up mid dungeon.
  7. Unlock Talents after Jackdaw’s Rest. Points start arriving at level 5 and wait for you until the main quest Jackdaw’s Rest opens the menu, and early picks in Core and Spell Knowledge make every fight easier.

If you only remember steps 3 and 4, you’re already ahead of the game.

Early Unlocks Worth Chasing

Early unlocks that make the biggest difference in Hogwarts Legacy.

The Payoff: Rewards Worth Grabbing

Okay but… this part is so good. A little effort in the right places hands you some seriously nice stuff.

  • Eye chests: those chests with a staring eye pay 500 Galleons each. Walk up while Disillusioned so the eye stays shut. Get spotted and the chest seals. They don’t respawn, so each one is a one time bonus.
  • Merlin Trials: you need Mallowsweet leaves to start each one, and finishing milestones in the Challenges menu adds gear slots. You claim the reward there yourself, so check in after every few trials.
  • Small chests: mostly Galleons, sometimes gear, and every new gear piece unlocks its look for your wardrobe.
  • Bandit camps: the big collection chest holds a gear Trait recipe you can apply at the Enchanted Loom. Clear the camp when you’re ready for a fight.

Little Tricks That Help a Lot

  • Change your look without losing stats: equip the strong piece, hover its slot and choose the change appearance option. Your favorite style, your best stats.
  • Moth puzzles: one Merlin Trial type has you guide moths with Lumos into hollow stone pillars. Lead one group at a time: putting a group into its pillar ends Lumos and drops any moths still following you.
  • Revelio Pages: there are 150 of them to find in Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and the Highlands, each one hidden until you cast Revelio near it.
  • Use Floo Flames constantly: once you touch one, it’s a fast travel point forever.
  • Drink Wiggenweld early: heal at half health, not on your last sliver.
  • Try a minimal HUD later: turning off the minimap and quest marker is a fun challenge once you know your way around. Not for day one, though.

Is It Still Worth Starting Now?

Honestly? Yes. The game is still very much alive. Hogwarts Legacy Beginner FAQ

Does your House change the game in Hogwarts Legacy?

A little. It sets your common room, some dialogue and one House specific quest. Spells, gear and the main story are the same for everyone.

How do you get more gear slots?

Complete Merlin Trials and claim the milestone rewards in the Challenges menu. You can go from 20 slots up to 40.

How do you open the eye chests?

What should I do first in Hogwarts Legacy?

Follow the early story to unlock your core spells, cast Revelio everywhere and grab Field Guide Pages for easy XP.
