You are staring at the Hogwarts Legacy character creator, cursor hovering between Witch and Wizard, and a little voice asks: what if I pick wrong? Take a breath. There is no wrong answer here, and the choice changes far less than it looks like it should.
Here is everything the Witch or Wizard option actually does, what it never touches, and which parts of your student you can still change later, so you can pick calmly and get on with exploring the castle.
Witch vs Wizard: The Short Answer
The choice does not change your story, your quests, your spells, your talents or the gear you can wear. Mechanically, a witch and a wizard play exactly the same game. What it does set is which dormitory you sleep in, and it shapes the occasional line where someone refers to you as a witch or a wizard.

The game keeps your student deliberately open. Most characters simply call you the new fifth-year, and your identity comes from your House, your friendships and your choices rather than a label.
What Changes and What Stays the Same
| Feature | Affected by Witch or Wizard? |
|---|---|
| Dormitory you are assigned | Yes |
| Occasional witch or wizard references in dialogue | Yes |
| Main story and side quests | No |
| Companions and relationship quests | No |
| Spells, talents and combat | No |
| Gear and outfits you can wear | No, everything is wearable |
| Face, hair, voice and other creator options | No, all options are open to both |
| House choice and Sorting | No |
Checklist:
- Same story: every main quest and side quest plays out identically, and nothing is locked to one choice.
- Same wardrobe: skirts, trousers, robes and cloaks are all usable by any student through your gear slots and Transmogrification, though a few outfits have slightly different cuts depending on your choice.
- Same creator: every face preset, hairstyle, voice and pitch option is available whichever you pick, so a witch can have a deep voice and a wizard can have long hair.
- Different dorm: you are placed in the witches’ or wizards’ dormitory of your House. It is your bed, not your Common Room, and you will spend very little time there. Fun detail straight from the books: witches can walk into the wizards’ dorm, but wizards can’t go up the witches’ stairs.
How to Choose: A Gentle Walkthrough
The creator moves quickly, but nothing in it is a trap. Here is how I would walk through it if you were sitting next to me on the couch.
- Pick a preset face that is close to what you imagine, then adjust skin tone, complexion, scars, freckles and moles.
- Choose hair and eyes. These are the easiest things to change later, so do not agonize.
- Pick your voice. The voice type is locked once you start, so listen to a few lines before moving on (pitch can still be tweaked later in the Audio settings).
- Choose Witch or Wizard. It only decides your dormitory and a few lines of dialogue, so pick the one that feels like your character.
- Name your student and double-check everything before confirming.
This is one of those moments worth slowing down for. Not because Witch or Wizard is risky, but because the face, voice and name you choose will be with you for dozens of hours.
What You Can Change Later
Once you leave the creator, your Witch or Wizard choice, voice type, name and base face are fixed for that save (only the voice pitch can be adjusted later in the Audio settings). There is no in-game way to swap Witch and Wizard afterwards; you would need a new save.

Some parts of your look stay flexible. Early in the story you visit Hogsmeade, where Madam Snelling’s Tress Emporium lets you restyle your hair and change details like hair color, eye color, eyebrows and complexion for a few Galleons. Your clothes are flexible too: Transmogrification lets you wear the look of any gear you have collected over the stats of another piece.
And if you ever regret how you built your character in combat, the June 2024 update added a talent point reset, so even your build is no longer carved in stone.
| Locked after creation | Changeable later |
|---|---|
| Witch or Wizard (dormitory) | Hairstyle and hair color |
| Character name | Eye color, eyebrows, complexion |
| Voice | Outfit appearance (Transmogrification) |
| Base face preset | Talents (talent reset) |
Tips for Your First Few Hours
- Pick with your heart: since nothing mechanical changes, choose the one that feels most like the character you want to play.
- Do not fear the dorm: it is a pit stop, and most of your evenings will be spent out in the castle and the Highlands.
- Save your worry for real choices: your House, how you handle the companion questlines, and which Unforgivable Curses you learn are the decisions that actually color your playthrough.
- Keep your gear tidy: your gear inventory fills fast early on. Sell or destroy duplicates and complete Merlin Trials to expand it.

Witch or Wizard FAQ
Does it matter if you choose Witch or Wizard in Hogwarts Legacy?
Not mechanically. It sets your dormitory and a few lines of dialogue, but story, quests, spells, gear and companions are identical.
Can you change from Witch to Wizard later?
No. The choice is locked for that save. You would have to start a new game to switch.
Can a witch wear wizard clothes in Hogwarts Legacy?
Yes. All gear and outfits can be worn by any student, and Transmogrification lets you change how equipped gear looks.
Does Witch or Wizard affect voice options?
No. Every voice and pitch option is available for both choices, though the voice you pick is locked once you start.
Can you change your appearance after character creation?
Partly. Madam Snelling’s Tress Emporium in Hogsmeade changes hair, eyes, eyebrows and complexion, but your face preset, voice and name stay fixed.
One more thing before you move on: pick the student who makes you smile and let the worry go. The real choices are waiting in the castle corridors and the side quests, and there is no wrong way to approach them. Take it at your own pace.
