Hogwarts Legacy hands you a broom roughly a third of the way into the story, and from that moment the map shrinks. There are 15 brooms to collect if you count the two added in the 2024 Summer Update, plus three upgrade levels that make every single one of them faster. Here’s what actually happens under the hood, and where each broom comes from.

How to Unlock Flying

You cannot buy a broom on day one. Flying opens through the main quest Flying Class, taught by Professor Kogawa on the castle grounds. You fly a school broom during the lesson, and once it is done, Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade starts selling brooms.

  • The Tech: finish Flying Class, then travel to Hogsmeade and talk to Albie Weekes at Spintwitches.
  • Cost: every broom in his shop costs 600 gold. You only need one to fly.
  • Equip: swap brooms any time from the Gear menu. Your upgrades carry over to whichever broom you pick.

Short on gold that early? Sell surplus gear at any shop before the trip. Selling a handful of unwanted robes and hats usually covers the first broom.

Every Broom in Hogwarts Legacy

Thirteen brooms shipped with the game. Nine are bought, four come from the balloon challenge, and the Summer Update added two more: the free Lavender Borealis and the Dark Lightning, which Albie Weekes sells at Spintwitches.

The nine purchasable brooms add up to 18,500 gold. None of them are missable: every vendor is still around after the credits roll.

The Balloon Challenge Brooms

Balloon sets are floating clusters of five balloons scattered across the Highlands, and you need to pop all five from your broom for the set to count. Popping 2 sets unlocks Night Dancer, and each later tier asks for more.

  • Exploit Alert: the brooms do not land in your inventory on their own. Open Challenges, then Exploration, and claim each reward manually.
  • Route tip: the Hogwarts Legacy interactive map makes it much easier to chain balloon sets in one flight instead of zigzagging.

Lavender Borealis

Warner Bros. Games added the Lavender Borealis broom in the Summer Update of 6 June 2024, alongside Photo Mode, the talent reset and the formerly PlayStation-only Haunted Hogsmeade Shop. It costs nothing: you collect it in game once the update is installed, which every current version already includes. The same update put the Dark Lightning broom on Albie’s shelf at Spintwitches.

Do Brooms Have Different Stats?

No. For the tech nerds: all brooms share the same speed, acceleration and handling. The Sky Scythe at 5,000 gold flies exactly like a 600 gold Yew Weaver. The devs clearly didn’t playtest the economy here, because the expensive brooms are pure cosmetics.

What actually changes your flight is the upgrade track, and upgrades apply to every broom you own.

Broom Upgrades: The Three Time Trials

Upgrades come from Albie Weekes through a chain of side quests. Each one ends in a ring race against the Slytherin flyer Imelda Reyes, and each new step unlocks only after you push the main story further.

Side questWhat happensUpgrade cost
Flight TestStarts after buying your first broom. Race Imelda’s course at the Quidditch pitch, then report back. Albie starts building an upgrade.None
Sweeping the CompetitionAlbie sends an owl after the main quest Percival Rackham’s Trial. Buy the first upgrade, then beat a harder trial.1,000
The Sky is the LimitUnlocks later in the story. Buy the second upgrade, then win the Coastal Broom Trial.4,000
Broom upgrade side quests in order.

Finishing The Sky is the Limit opens the final upgrade level at Spintwitches. The Gear menu shows three upgrade pips under your broom, so you can always check how far along you are.

How to Win the Ring Races

  • Test Results: missing a ring adds a time penalty, so a clean line beats a fast sloppy one.
  • Gold orbs: the glowing gold boosters before the rings refill your speed. Line up with them and you barely need your own boost.
  • Retry freely: losing costs nothing. Talk to Imelda again and rerun the course.
  • Patched? No patch since launch has listed changes to broom speed or the trials, so these routes still work.

Brooms vs Flying Mounts

Hippogriffs, Thestrals and the Highwing are mounts, not brooms. They fly too, but broom upgrades do not affect them. If you care about raw speed across the map, a fully upgraded broom is the one to summon.

Plenty of players are still flying around the Highlands years after launch, on PC, consoles and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Hogwarts Legacy Brooms FAQ

How do you get a broom in Hogwarts Legacy?

Complete the main quest Flying Class with Professor Kogawa, then buy a broom for 600 gold from Albie Weekes at Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade.

How many brooms are in Hogwarts Legacy?

15 in total: 13 from launch (9 bought, 4 from the balloon challenge) plus the Lavender Borealis and Dark Lightning from the 2024 Summer Update.

What is the fastest broom in Hogwarts Legacy?

There isn’t one. All brooms share the same stats. Speed only improves through Albie Weekes’s upgrades, which apply to every broom.

How do you upgrade your broom?

Do the side quests Flight Test, Sweeping the Competition and The Sky is the Limit for Albie Weekes. Each unlocks after story progress and ends in a ring race.

Can you miss any brooms?

No. Every vendor and the balloon challenge stay available after the main story ends.

Final Verdict: buy the cheapest broom that makes you smile, put every spare galleon into Albie’s upgrades, and leave the 5,000 gold brooms for when your vault is overflowing. Same stats, different paint. Science time is over, go fly.
