So you’ve wandered out of the Great Hall, and your quest log is quietly filling up with little extras. Good news: there’s no wrong way to do this. This guide covers how many side quests Hogwarts Legacy really has, how they differ from relationship quests and assignments, how to find the stragglers, and what counts toward The Good Samaritan.

You’d be surprised what’s hiding in the side content. Let’s start with the big picture.

How Many Side Quests Are in Hogwarts Legacy?

The quest log splits optional content into three categories, and only one of them counts as “side quests” for completion.

Quest typeCountCounts toward The Good Samaritan?
Side Quests58 (57 on older non PlayStation versions)Yes
Relationship Quests24 (Sebastian, Natsai and Poppy)No, but needed for companion trophies
Assignments12 (some guides count 11)No, but they unlock spells
Hogwarts Legacy optional quest types and counts.

The 57 or 58 Question: The 58th side quest, Minding Your Own Business (the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop), launched as a PlayStation exclusive. Warner Bros. Games’ summer update in June 2024 unlocked it on every platform, along with the other former PlayStation extras. If your save shows 57, update the game: the quest appears in Hogsmeade once you reach the winter part of the main story.

  • Missable! Good news: none of them. Side quests stay available after the main story, so you can finish everything in free roam.
  • Checklist: The Good Samaritan trophy or achievement unlocks when every side quest is done. It is also part of 100% completion.
  • Heads Up: Relationship quests do not count toward The Good Samaritan, but they have their own trophies.

Side Quests, Relationship Quests and Assignments

These three get mixed up all the time, so here’s the difference in plain terms:

  • Side Quests: Mostly one off stories from students, villagers and Highlands locals, plus a few multi part chains like Crossed Wands, Summoner’s Court and the broom trials. They hand out gear, cosmetics and Galleons.
  • Relationship Quests: Your three companions’ personal storylines. Sebastian’s quests all start with “In the Shadow of”, while Natsai and Poppy each have their own multi-part threads.
  • Assignments: Homework from professors. Each one teaches a spell, and some of those spells are needed for later main story beats, so do them as they appear.

Lore Connection: This random detail actually connects to the bigger story. Sebastian’s relationship quests are where his story really happens, and the choices you make in them decide how it ends. Don’t skip this one.

How to Find Every Side Quest

Hunting for quests is half the fun. Here’s your checklist:

  • Step 1: Open the map and zoom into one region at a time. Characters with a side quest are marked with a quest icon once you have discovered the area.
  • Step 2: Talk to everyone with a speech prompt as you walk the castle corridors and village streets. Many early side quests start inside Hogwarts.
  • Step 3: Open the Quests menu and check the Side tab. Anything you have picked up but not finished is listed there.
  • Step 4: Keep playing the story. New side quests unlock as main quests progress, including a few late ones.
  • Step 5: After the credits, sweep each region again. Almost everything is open by then, though some spots still need upgraded Alohomora or specific spells.

The Hogwarts Legacy interactive map is handy for checking which areas you have not explored yet.

Where Completionists Get Stuck

Completionists, you’ll want to know: most “I’m stuck at 55 of 58” stories come down to the same few culprits.

  • Multi-part series: Quests like Crossed Wands and the Summoner’s Court matches come in rounds. Each round is a separate entry, and players often forget the last ones.
  • The former exclusive: On older saves, the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest may simply not have been picked up yet.
  • Late unlocks: A handful of side quests and relationship quests only appear deep into the story. Keep going and they show up.
  • Started but parked: Check the completed list in the Quests menu against your Side tab. A quest you accepted and forgot still counts as unfinished.

(Pro tip: Keep a running tally, like 32 of 58. Watching it climb is surprisingly motivating through the long stretches.)

A Few Side Quests Worth Doing Early

There’s no wrong way to approach this, but some quests pay off sooner than others:

  • Crossed Wands: The dueling club rounds are a great way to practice combat early and they come in a neat series.
  • The Hall of Herodiana: A short puzzle quest that shows off how the game hides secrets in plain sight.
  • ‘Dissending’ for Sweets: A quick, fun quest with a cheeky payoff.
  • All’s Well That Ends Bell, Flying Off the Shelves and Like a Moth to a Frame: Light, story driven quests that make the world feel lived in.

What You Get

  • Gear and cosmetics: Many side quests reward a unique robe, hat or accessory.
  • Galleons and materials: Handy for upgrades, potions and plants.
  • Trophies: The Good Samaritan for all side quests, plus companion trophies for relationship quests.
  • Talent resets: The same June 2024 update also lets you redistribute talent points, for 200 Gold per point, so your build is never locked in (quest choices still are).

Hogwarts Legacy still has a busy player base on PC, and you can see it on the live Hogwarts Legacy player count. Curious whether it is worth a return trip before the sequel? Our Hogwarts Legacy in 2026 verdict and everything we know about Hogwarts Legacy 2 cover that.

Hogwarts Legacy Side Quests FAQ

How many side quests are in Hogwarts Legacy?

58 on every platform since the June 2024 update. Before that, PC, Xbox and Switch had 57 because the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest was a PlayStation exclusive.

Are any side quests missable?

No. You can finish every side quest after the main story in free roam.

Do relationship quests count for The Good Samaritan?

No. Only the 58 side quests count. Relationship quests are tied to the companion trophies instead.

Why am I stuck at 57 side quests?

Usually you are missing the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest, Minding Your Own Business, or the last round of a multi-part series like Crossed Wands or Summoner’s Court.

One more thing before you move on: it’s a marathon, not a sprint. The quiet side quests are often the ones that stick with you, so take it at your own pace and enjoy the Highlands.
