Finding a unicorn in Hogwarts Legacy feels a lot like it does in the books: you need patience and a little luck. There is one den in the whole game, it holds one unicorn at a time, and the shiny version makes the hunt even longer.
Honestly? It’s one of the sweetest little side goals in the game. Let’s walk through this together: where the den is, how to catch a unicorn without it bolting, the Hazel side quest, breeding and the shiny hunt.
Where Is the Unicorn Den?
Unicorns only spawn in a single Beast Den, on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Guides agree on the spot, they just describe different routes to it, so here’s the chill version:
| Detail | Answer |
|---|---|
| Number of unicorn dens | One |
| Area | Forbidden Forest, on its edge near Upper Hogsfield |
| Fastest Floo Flame | Upper Hogsfield, then head northwest |
| Alternative Floo Flame | North Ford Bog Entrance, then head south through the forest |
| Unicorns per visit | One at a time |
| Needed to capture | Nab-Sack |
No Stress: the Forbidden Forest is full of paw icons, and they look identical on the map. Hover over each den icon to check its beast type, or open our Hogwarts Legacy interactive map and pin the den before you set off.
You can walk, fly your broom or ride a mount there. Flying from Upper Hogsfield is the quickest, and you land right on top of it.
Before You Go: Unlock the Nab-Sack
You cannot catch any beast until Deek gives you the Nab-Sack during the main quest “The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.” That quest also opens your first vivarium (the Forest one) in the Room of Requirement, which is where your unicorn will live. The other three come with later quests.
If you’re just starting out, don’t rush ahead for this. The main story gets you there naturally, and it’s worth the effort, I promise.

How to Catch a Unicorn
Unicorns are skittish. Walk straight at one and it gallops off, so take it slow:
- Land a little away from the den so you do not spook it on arrival.
- Cast Disillusionment and sneak in close while invisible.
- Stop it running. Levioso lifts it in place, and Glacius freezes it for longer. Either buys you time.
- Use the Nab-Sack and finish the button prompts before the spell wears off.
- Drop it off in a vivarium in the Room of Requirement.
Don’t stress if it bolts the first time. Step back, let it settle, and try again.
The Unique Unicorn: Hazel’s Side Quest
Okay but, this part is so good. After you finish Niamh Fitzgerald’s Trial, Betty Bugbrooke in Hogsmeade Square starts the side quest “The Unique Unicorn.” Her unicorn, Hazel, was hurt protecting her from wolves and fled into the Forbidden Forest.
- Where to go: the quest marker sends you to the same unicorn den. Floo to Upper Hogsfield and fly over.
- How to find her: look for the unicorn labeled “Hazel the Unicorn.”
- How to catch her: Disillusionment, then Glacius, then the Nab-Sack, exactly like a wild unicorn.
- The Payoff: return to Betty and she lets you keep Hazel in your vivarium. You also get experience and a conjuration recipe.
Hazel is the only named unicorn in the game, so she is a lovely centerpiece for your vivarium.
Breeding Unicorns
Want a whole herd? You need one male and one female, which means at least two trips to the den, since only one unicorn appears at a time.
- Get the pen: once Deek’s Foal of the Dead quest has unlocked breeding, buy the Breeding Pen spellcraft from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade for 1,000 Galleons and conjure it for 15 Moonstones.
- Place it: conjure it in a vivarium that fits unicorns, such as the Forest Vivarium.
- Breed: put a male and a female inside and collect the baby once the timer finishes.
Unicorn hair is a beast product you collect by caring for your unicorns, and it feeds into gear upgrades through the Loom, so a small herd pays for itself.
How to Find a Shiny Unicorn
Shiny beasts in Hogwarts Legacy are rare color variants. A regular unicorn has a white coat, while the shiny variant is gold. In darker light it can look almost brown, so check for the star next to its name too.
Because the den only ever holds one unicorn, you cannot scan a herd for the odd one out. Each visit is one roll of the dice. Here’s the routine that works:
- Check the coat before you cast anything. If it is the regular white, you can still catch it for breeding.
- Leave and come back: catch the unicorn (or leave it), then fast travel away and let some in game time pass before your next visit so the den can respawn.
- Use the wait menu: skipping to a different time of day passes in-game time quickly, so you do not have to play the hours out. It isn’t a guaranteed instant respawn, so a save and reload after the skip helps.
- Be patient: a shiny can take many visits. Take your time with this one.
