Some shrines just hand themselves to you. Kah Yah Shrine asks you to slow down, stroll along a sunny beach, and take a few photos first. (Honestly, that’s half the charm.)
This guide walks you through the whole thing, from the quest on the sand to the Spirit Orb waiting at the end. Take it at your own pace, because there’s no wrong way to do this.
Where to Find Kah Yah Shrine and the Quest Behind It
Kah Yah Shrine is one of the Hidden Shrines in Breath of the Wild. It sits in the Palmorae Ruins in East Necluda, on the southeast coast of Hyrule near Lurelin Village. Its trial is called Quick Thinking.
You can’t walk up and open it right away. The shrine only appears once you complete a short shrine quest called A Fragmented Monument.
- Checklist: Sheikah Slate with the camera rune, plus a bow and a few arrows for the shrine itself.
- Region: East Necluda, in the Palmorae Ruins near Lurelin Village (Faron Tower region on your map).
- Quest Giver: Garini, a man searching the beach ruins for three monument fragments.
- Easy Way In: Find Zuta, a little boy running around Lurelin Village. Talk to him and he’ll run you straight to where the quest begins.
- Best Time to Visit: Night. Garini mentions the fragments are easier to spot after dark, so make a fire and rest until evening if you like.
- Time Needed: Not long at all. This is a gentle one, so enjoy the scenery.
Take Your Time: The Necluda coastline is one of the prettiest stretches of the map. This is one of those moments worth slowing down for.
Step-by-Step: Reveal and Solve Kah Yah Shrine

Part One: Make the Shrine Appear

- Step 1: Head to Lurelin Village and talk to Zuta, or travel straight to the Palmorae Ruins on the beach to the east.
- Step 2: Speak with Garini among the ruins. He’s looking for three fragments scattered around the area.
- Step 3: Track down all three fragments using the table below. One takes a bit of a hike, so don’t worry if it takes a minute.
- Step 4: Take a picture of each fragment with your Sheikah Slate.
- Step 5: Return to Garini and show him your photos. He can decipher the message, but the riddle still stumps him. It says you must kneel in reverence for the shrine to reveal itself.
- Step 6: Walk onto one of the nearby round platforms and crouch right in the middle. Garini kneels too, and Kah Yah Shrine rises from the ground.
| Fragment | Where to Find It | Done? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 of 3 | On the beach, behind some palm trees east of Garini | ☐ |
| 2 of 3 | In the water, on an outcropping west of Garini, just past some crates and barrels | ☐ |
| 3 of 3 | At the end of the curly peninsula, next to a palm tree | ☐ |
Missable! The photos are what count here. Make sure each fragment is actually in the frame before you head back to Garini.
Part Two: The Right Side of the Shrine
Once you’re inside, the room is split into two halves. Start with the right side, which is the easier of the two.
- Step 7: Look for the four barrels sitting in front of a closed gate, next to a platform that moves automatically from one end of the room to the other.
- Step 8: Wait for the platform to arrive, place a barrel on top, and ride along with it.
- Step 9: Watch for an orange crystal switch glowing on the right. Shoot it with an arrow to open the gate.
- Step 10: Wait until you’ve passed through, turn around, and shoot the switch again.
- Step 11: Grab the barrel and place it on the switch at the end of the ride. The door opens, and inside is a chest holding a Knight’s Claymore.
(Pro tip: Line up your shot before the platform gets close. The switch only glows for a short stretch of the ride.)
Part Three: The Left Side of the Shrine
The left side asks for a little more timing. Don’t skip this one, because it’s where the Small Key lives.
- Step 12: Grab a barrel and step onto the moving platform, but don’t set the barrel down yet.
- Step 13: Stand on the left side so you avoid the first obstacle. Then place the barrel on the right and duck.
- Step 14: Ride under the next obstacle, then move over to the right side of the platform to clear the final grate.
- Step 15: At the end of the ride, place the barrel on the switch and open the shrine chest to get the Small Key.
- Step 16: Head back to the door in the middle of the room and open it. Monk Kah Yah is waiting with your Spirit Orb.
One more thing before you move on: some guides describe the barrel placement a little differently on this side. What matters is that you and the barrel both clear each obstacle, so adjust if something feels off.
Rewards and Benefits
- Knight’s Claymore: A two-handed weapon from the chest behind the right-side door.
- Small Key: Your reward from the left-side chest, and the thing that gets you through to the monk.
- Spirit Orb: Given by Monk Kah Yah. Save up a few and you can trade them for more hearts or stamina.
- Checklist: One more shrine ticked off and one more quest completed.
Lore Connection: The kneeling riddle is a small reminder that Hyrule rewards patience and curiosity. A shrine hidden behind a broken monument and a quiet gesture fits that spirit well.
Pro Tips
- Rest Until Night: The fragments are easier to find in the dark. Camp by a fire and let time pass. (Pro tip: Hanging out at the beach is a lovely excuse to enjoy the scenery.)
- Use the Map: If you’re short on patience, drop pins on the three fragment locations before you start.
- Bring Arrows: You need your bow for the right-side switch. Check your quiver before you go inside.
- Crouch Early: On the left side, duck as soon as the barrel is set so you don’t clip the obstacle.
- Don’t Panic if You Miss: The platform keeps moving, so you can try again on the next pass.
- Talk to Everyone: Zuta, Garini, and the other villagers around Lurelin add flavor that’s easy to miss if you rush.
Why Kah Yah Shrine Is Worth Your Time
Kah Yah Shrine is a small, friendly puzzle wrapped in a quiet little quest. The barrel and platform setup teaches you to think about timing and positioning without ever feeling punishing.
It’s also a good reminder that side content isn’t a chore. Every shrine you find is a piece of Hyrule’s story, and every quest gives you another reason to stop and look around.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You’ve got this.
