All that sticky sludge you’ve been wading through around Zora’s Domain has a source, and it’s waiting for you at the end of the Water Temple. The Mucktorok, Scourge of the Water Temple, is a small octopus-like creature hiding inside a big sludge shark, and it’s the boss that closes out the Sidon of the Zora main quest.

Good news first: this fight is much friendlier than it looks once you know the trick. Take it at your own pace, and you’ll have it rinsed clean before long.

Meet the Mucktorok: What You’re Walking Into

You reach the Mucktorok after the Water Temple’s main puzzle, where you get four water wheels turning to fill the temple’s vessels and wash the sludge away. Once the last one is running, the boss shows itself.

  • Where: The Water Temple, high in the sky above the Lanayru region.
  • Quest: Sidon of the Zora (main quest), so you can’t skip it.
  • Phases: Two. The second starts once its health drops to about half.
  • The Catch: You can’t hurt the Mucktorok while it’s inside the sludge shark.
  • The Answer: Water. Sidon’s water shield, Splash Fruit, Chuchu Jelly or an Opal fused weapon all wash the sludge off and expose the boss.

Lore Connection: This isn’t a grand villain with a speech. It’s the creature behind an environmental disaster that left King Dorephan wounded and the Zora scrambling, which is why beating it feels a lot like cleaning up someone’s home.

A little preparation makes this fight calm instead of frantic. Here’s your checklist before you walk in:

Step by Step: How to Beat the Mucktorok

The whole fight is one loop: wash, knock down, strike, repeat.

  1. Keep Sidon close. Sidon’s power gives you a water shield. It blocks one hit, and when you attack while it’s up, you send out a wave of water. Request it again whenever it pops.
  2. Wash the shark. Hit the sludge shark with Sidon’s water wave or a water fused arrow. The sludge washes off and the Mucktorok tumbles out.
  3. Knock it down. Once exposed, it tries to run. Chase it, or shoot it with an arrow to drop it again.
  4. Hit hard. Fast weapons like spears work well here. After a few hits it flies off and builds a new shark.
  5. Repeat into phase two. The same rhythm carries you through to the end.

Reading the Shark’s Attacks

Knowing what’s coming turns this from a scramble into something closer to a dance.

  • Charge: The shark stops, faces you and lunges. Sidestep it, then answer with water.
  • Sludge Beam: It sprays a stream of muck and sweeps it across the arena. Jump it or let Sidon’s shield take it.
  • Sludge Rings: It leaps and slams down, sending out growing rings of sludge. Time a jump over them, and use the paraglider if you need extra air.

What Changes in Phase Two

At about half health, the Mucktorok jumps to the middle of the arena and starts covering the floor with sludge. Sludge slows you down, so clear a path with water attacks before you chase it. One more thing before you move on: arrows are your best friend here, since you can knock it down without wading through muck at all.

If the Fight Feels Too Hard

There’s no shame in stepping away. Head off to a few shrines, collect Lights of Blessing, and trade four of them at a Goddess Statue for an extra heart or more stamina. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
