Eshos Shrine is the game teaching you to parry, and it is a lot friendlier than the real thing out in Hyrule. Two Constructs, two projectile types, one lesson about which shield to hold. Get it right and you walk out with a Mighty Zonaite Shield and a Light of Blessing.

Here’s how to reach the shrine on the Dueling Peaks, beat the Combat Training: Shields trial, and avoid the classic mistake that sets your shield on fire.

Eshos Shrine Location

Eshos Shrine sits on the northern side of the Dueling Peaks in West Necluda, on a cliff ledge overlooking Dueling Peaks Stable.

Eshos Shrine quick facts.

How to Get There

  • Glide In: warp to Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower, launch, and paraglide toward the northern Dueling Peak. Look for the shrine’s glow on the cliff face and land on the ledge.
  • Climb Up: start from Dueling Peaks Stable and climb. Rest on ledges as you go, and pack a stamina meal (think Stamella Shrooms) if your wheel is still small.
  • Use the Map: drop a pin on the coordinates above, or check the TOTK interactive map, so you can see exactly which ledge to aim for.

(Pro tip: if it is raining, skip the climb. Glide in from the tower instead. Wet rock will have you sliding all the way back to the road.)

Eshos Shrine Walkthrough

Here’s the full breakdown. The trial is one room, and every enemy here can only be beaten by sending its own shot back at it.

Before the Fight: Grab the Practice Shields

Head down the steps into the main room. Near the southwest corner you will find a few Rusty Shields and Old Wooden Shields. Grab one of each. They are free, and they mean your good shields never have to risk this fight.

Construct 1: The Fireball

  1. Walk toward the centre of the room. A Construct holding a bow and a Ruby Rod wakes up and the way back closes.
  2. Equip the Rusty Shield. Metal does not burn.
  3. Hold ZL to lock on and raise your shield.
  4. As the fireball is about to hit, press A to parry. It flies straight back into the Construct.

A clean parry is all it takes. Damage from your sword does nothing here, so do not waste time swinging.

Construct 2: The Lightning Ball

  1. A second Construct carrying a Topaz weapon appears and starts firing balls of electricity.
  2. Swap to the Old Wooden Shield. Parrying lightning with metal shocks you and makes you drop your gear.
  3. Lock on with ZL, wait for the shot, press A at the last moment.
  4. Send it back and the Construct goes down. Trial cleared. Nailed it?

The timing is where people slip. Press A too early and Link just bashes the air with his shield. Wait until the projectile is almost touching you.

Shield Matchup Cheat Sheet

This rule follows you for the rest of the game, so it is worth burning into memory.

Incoming attackUse this shieldWhat happens with the wrong one
Fire (Ruby Rod, fire Keese, fire breath)Metal, like the Rusty ShieldA wooden shield catches fire and burns away
Electricity (Topaz weapons, Electric Keese, Lizalfos shocks)Wood, like the Old Wooden ShieldA metal shield conducts the shock, so Link drops his gear
Arrows and plain projectilesAny shieldNothing special, just watch durability

Rewards

  • Mighty Zonaite Shield: in the chest past the trial. Open it on your way to the exit.
  • Light of Blessing: examine the altar at the end. Four of them trade for a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel at a Goddess Statue.
  • Fast Travel Point: the shrine becomes a permanent warp on the Dueling Peaks, handy for the Necluda side of the map.
  • Depths twin: the Sohse Lightroot sits right below the shrine in the Depths (Eshos spelled backwards).

Pro Tips

  • Watch the shot, not the enemy: focus on the projectile as it flies in. The parry window is easier to read that way.
  • Swap early: change shields as soon as the first Construct drops, before the second one fires.
  • Check durability: a nearly broken shield can shatter mid parry. Use the free ones from the room.
  • Practice pays off: perfect guards also send back Octorok rocks and Construct shots out in the world. Pair a good shield with Fuse and you can turn a plain board into something that hits back.
