The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Any% world record has dropped below 38 minutes for the first time. Canadian runner MoldyMeatballs now holds the top spot on Speedrun.com with a 37:55, edging out a fresh 38:07 from Spain’s Xdri33s.

It caps a busy couple of months at the top of the leaderboard. The three fastest Any% times have all been set recently, and each one beats the 39:27 by Player5 that had held first place for around a year. For context, the first record set on launch day back in May 2023 was gymnast86’s run of about 1 hour 34 minutes, so the category has lost more than 55 minutes since release.

The Current Any% Top 5

  • 1. MoldyMeatballs (Canada): 37:55
  • 2. Xdri33s (Spain): 38:07
  • 3. eliasnxy (Austria): 38:31
  • 4. Player5: 39:27
  • 5. Calamity_Link: 39:43

MoldyMeatballs’ run description on Speedrun.com reads simply “37!”, which says it all for a category where every second has been fought over for years. The run has been verified by the board’s moderators and the full video is up on YouTube.

How the Category Works

The record sits in the main Any% board, which is the Glitched category for game versions before 1.2.1. In practice, every top run is played on the original Nintendo Switch using patch 1.0.0, the launch version that still has the glitches runners rely on. All of the top five runs also use amiibo, which the category allows.

Any% means reaching the credits as fast as possible by any means, so runners skip almost everything a normal playthrough involves. There are separate leaderboards for longer categories such as All Dungeons, All Shrines and 100%, where even the fastest 100% runs take well over a day of play time.

Back in January 2024, Player5 set a 40:57 and said that was probably it for him in Any%. He later came back and lowered his own time to 39:27, which went on to hold first place for around a year before this latest wave of runs.

Want to Try It Yourself?

You will need a Switch copy of Tears of the Kingdom on a version below 1.2.1, ideally patch 1.0.0. The rules, routes and tutorials are on the Tears of the Kingdom Speedrun.com page and the ZeldaSpeedRuns TotK hub. If you would rather take the long way around Hyrule, our Tears of the Kingdom guide hub has every shrine, temple and Korok Seed covered.
