Grand Theft Auto 6 is officially in the running for The Game Awards 2026. The show’s updated eligibility rules confirm that any game commercially available by November 20, 2026, at 9 PM PT qualifies, and Rockstar’s next open world crime epic is set to launch on November 19. That is one day to spare.

For anyone who spent the last few months wondering whether GTA 6 would land in the 2026 or 2027 awards cycle, the question is settled. It can compete for Game of the Year this December.

The key dates

  • November 19, 2026: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • November 20, 2026, 9 PM PT: eligibility cutoff for The Game Awards 2026.
  • November 30, 2026: separate cutoff for the fan voted Players’ Voice category.
  • December 10, 2026: The Game Awards 2026 ceremony.

Will the jury have enough time to play it?

This was the big concern when GTA 6 settled on a late November date. Being eligible is one thing, but the voting jury is made up of media outlets that need real time with a game before judging it, and a Rockstar open world is not something you finish over a weekend. Several critics and former voters openly questioned whether a release this close to the deadline could get a fair shot.

There is some good news on that front. Reports say reviewers will get access to the game ahead of launch, which would give critics time to actually play and review GTA 6 before the voting process starts. Rockstar has not detailed its review plans publicly yet, so treat that part as reported rather than confirmed.

It is also worth remembering that eligibility does not mean a nomination. That decision still sits with the jury.

A crowded Game of the Year race

GTA 6 is not walking into an empty field. 2026 has already delivered heavy hitters like Resident Evil Requiem, Saros, 007 First Light and Slay the Spire 2, and the bar for Game of the Year has been set high after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 broke the record for most wins at last year’s show.

Still, Rockstar’s track record speaks for itself. Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the best selling games ever made and is still pulling in a huge player base more than a decade later, which you can see on our GTA V Enhanced player count page. If GTA 6 lands anywhere near expectations, it will be the game to beat.

Our take

Making the cutoff by a single day feels very on brand for one of the most delayed and most anticipated games of all time. The real question is not whether GTA 6 is eligible, but whether a few weeks with the game is enough for the jury to do it justice. Either way, December 10 just got a lot more interesting.
