So your Vivarium is filling up with Mooncalves, Puffskeins and the odd grumpy Graphorn, and you’re wondering what comes next. Breeding is the answer, and it is one of the coziest side activities in Hogwarts Legacy.
There’s no wrong way to approach this, and there’s no rush. This guide walks you through unlocking the Breeding Pen, the exact steps to get your first baby beast, which species can breed, and why it’s worth the Moonstones.
What You Need Before You Can Breed Beasts
Breeding isn’t available from the start. A little prep comes first, and doing it in order saves a lot of backtracking.
- Checklist: finish the main quest The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. That’s where Deek gives you the Nab-Sack and your first Vivarium beasts.
- Checklist: pick up Deek’s side quest Foal of the Dead in the Room of Requirement.
- Checklist: buy the Breeding Pen spellcraft from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade for 1,000 Galleons.
- Checklist: have at least 15 Moonstones ready. That’s what each Breeding Pen costs to conjure.
- Checklist: a male and a female of the same species.
If you’re not there yet, enjoy the journey and come back when you are. The Hogwarts Legacy hub has the rest of our guides to keep you busy in the meantime.
How To Breed Beasts: Foal of the Dead Step by Step
Your first breeding run is the Foal of the Dead tutorial, so the example beast is always the Thestral. Here’s your checklist:
- Talk to Deek in the Room of Requirement to start Foal of the Dead.
- Rescue a male and a female Thestral. Deek marks the den on your map.
- Buy the Breeding Pen spellcraft at Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade.
- Return to Deek. A new Vivarium, the swamp one, opens up at this point.
- Step inside, cast your Conjuration spell and place the Breeding Pen (15 Moonstones).
- Release both Thestrals into that Vivarium.
- Interact with the pen’s stand, pick the species, then choose your breeding pair.
- Wait 30 minutes. When the timer ends, your foal is waiting in the pen.
Take Your Time: the 30 minute wait is a perfect excuse to go clear a camp or two in the Highlands. You don’t need to stand by the pen and watch it.

Which Beasts Can You Breed?
Hogwarts Legacy has 13 capturable beast species, and 12 of them can be bred. The only exception is the Phoenix, which is a one of a kind creature you rescue in Deek’s Phoenix Rising quest.
| Beast | Can you breed it? |
|---|---|
| Diricawl | Yes |
| Fwooper | Yes |
| Giant Purple Toad | Yes |
| Graphorn | Yes |
| Hippogriff | Yes |
| Jobberknoll | Yes |
| Kneazle | Yes |
| Mooncalf | Yes |
| Niffler | Yes |
| Puffskein | Yes |
| Thestral | Yes |
| Unicorn | Yes |
| Phoenix | No, it’s unique |
Lore Connection: leaving the Phoenix out fits the wizarding world. Phoenixes are famously rare and reborn from their own ashes, so a pen full of Phoenix chicks would feel wrong. Your one Phoenix is a rescue, not a breeding project. Breed all 12 of the others at least once and you unlock The Nature of the Beast trophy/achievement.
Breeding Other Beasts After the Tutorial
Once your Thestral foal arrives, you can repeat the same steps with any species you’ve captured. Each Vivarium can hold its own Breeding Pens, so you can run several timers at once.
- Same species only: one male and one female of the same beast. Mixed pairs won’t work.
- Several pens: you can add more pens to a Vivarium, though only a handful fit comfortably in the space.
- Conjuration budget: every pen, feeder and decoration counts toward the Vivarium’s conjuration limit, so plan your layout.
Completionists, you’ll want to know: offspring stay babies. They never grow into adults, which is either adorable or a little bittersweet depending on how attached you get. Offspring cannot breed themselves, but they still give materials when fed and brushed, and you can sell them at Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade if your Vivarium gets crowded.
Catching Breeding Pairs Without the Stress
Wild dens hold one or more beasts, and dens are where you will find most breeding partners. A few habits make capturing much calmer:
- Slow them down: Levioso, Glacius and Arresto Momentum stop a fleeing beast long enough to finish the Nab-Sack ring.
- Track your pairs: check your Beast Inventory for genders before heading out, so you know whether you still need a male or a female.
- Respawning dens: dens refill over time, so you can come back for a missing partner later.
- Plan the route: the Hogwarts Legacy interactive map makes it easier to chain several dens in one trip.

Why Breeding Is Worth Your Time
Beyond the joy of a Vivarium full of baby beasts, there’s a real payoff. Every beast you feed and brush drops materials, and those materials power gear upgrades and Traits at the Enchanted Loom.
- More materials: more beasts per Vivarium means more drops per visit.
- Rare materials: breeding rarer species like Unicorns or Thestrals is the easiest way to keep the high tier materials coming.
- Completion: breeding fills out your Vivariums and gives you a reason to keep coming back to the Room of Requirement.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Plenty of players are still filling their Vivariums years after launch, and you can see how many are in the game right now on our live Hogwarts Legacy player count.
