Hogwarts Legacy gives you a huge castle, a village and a whole stretch of Highlands to explore, and walking all of it twice gets old fast. Floo Flames are the fix: green flames you discover once and then teleport to whenever you like.

Here’s how Floo Flames work, how many there are, where the tricky ones hide and how to collect all of them for the trophy.

What Are Floo Flames?

Floo Flames are Hogwarts Legacy’s fast travel points. They’re a nod to the Floo Network from the books, where witches and wizards step into a fireplace and vanish in green fire. In the game, it’s simpler: find a flame once, and it’s a destination on your map forever.

  • Where They Are: All over Hogwarts castle, in Hogsmeade, and across the open world, often next to villages, ruins and landmarks.
  • What They Look Like: Green flames, usually in small braziers or on walls. They aren’t limited to fireplaces.
  • Floo Powder: Not needed. You never buy or carry anything to use them.
  • Missable? No. Every flame can still be found after the story ends.

How Many Floo Flames Are There?

There are 83 Floo Flames you can unlock in a single playthrough. The game technically has 86, but each house common room has its own flame and you can only enter your own house’s, so three of them are off limits on any save.

How to Unlock and Use Floo Flames: Step by Step

The system is simple, but here’s the full breakdown so nothing trips you up.

  1. Play through the opening. Fast travel opens up early in your first days at Hogwarts, and the game introduces it with a short tutorial.
  2. Walk near a flame. You don’t press anything. Getting within a few meters discovers it and unlocks it for fast travel.
  3. Keep exploring. Every new flame you pass unlocks automatically, so you collect plenty just by playing the story.
  4. Open your map. Undiscovered flames show as grey icons, discovered ones as green.
  5. Pick a destination. Select a green flame and confirm. Inside the castle, you can also pick flames from the list on the left side of the Hogwarts map.
  6. Travel. You land at that flame after a short load.

(Pro tip: open world flames only appear on your map once you’ve revealed the area around them, so flying over a region early fills in a lot of grey icons at once.)

The Story Locked Flames

Two castle flames can’t be unlocked until the story gets there. Both sit under “Secret Rooms” on the left side of the Hogwarts map once they’re open.

The Room of Requirement flame is the one you’ll use most. It’s your base for brewing, growing plants and caring for beasts, so having a one click trip back saves loads of time.

Why Floo Flames Matter

  • Speed: Cross the castle in seconds instead of fighting the moving staircases.
  • Collectible Hunting: Jump between regions when you’re chasing Demiguise Statues, Field Guide pages or Merlin Trials.
  • Quest Hopping: Many side quests send you back and forth between Hogsmeade, the castle and the Highlands. Flames cut that down to a couple of loads.
  • Exploration Tracking: Grey icons tell you exactly which corners you haven’t visited yet.

Our Hogwarts Legacy interactive map shows the world at a glance, which makes planning a flame route much easier.

Pro Tips for Collecting All 83

  • Get Your Broom First: Flying makes open world flames much faster to collect. Your best bet is to save the big Highlands sweep for after you unlock flight.
  • Sweep the Castle Wing by Wing: Hogwarts holds 33 flames. Clear one wing at a time and check the map list as you go.
  • Don’t Panic About Common Rooms: You’ll only ever unlock your own. The trophy counts 83, not 86.
  • Story-Locked Flames: no Floo Flame needs Alohomora. The only ones gated behind progress are the Map Chamber (Jackdaw’s Rest) and the Room of Requirement (The Room of Requirement quest), so if a castle flame seems missing, keep playing the story.
  • Look Around Landmarks: Open world flames tend to sit at the edge of villages, ruins and camps.

(Pro tip: before a long trip into a new region, grab the nearest flame on the way. That’s your free ride home when you’re done.)

Floo Flames FAQ

How many Floo Flames are in Hogwarts Legacy?

83 can be unlocked on one save: 33 in Hogwarts, 3 in Hogsmeade and 47 in the open world. There are 86 in the game, but you can only reach your own house’s common room flame.

How do you unlock Floo Flames?

Walk near one. Getting within a few meters discovers it automatically, and it turns green on your map.

Are any Floo Flames missable?

No. You can collect every one after the main story, including the Map Chamber and Room of Requirement flames.

Is there a trophy for Floo Flames?

Yes. “Floo Around the World” unlocks once you’ve discovered all 83 flames available on your save.

Your Next Step: Get your broom, sweep one region at a time and keep an eye on those grey icons. Once all 83 are green, Hogwarts and the Highlands feel a lot smaller, and you get more time for the fun parts. Nailed it? Then you’re winning!
