Welcome, new student! Hogwarts Legacy is huge, and it’s completely normal to feel a little lost the first time you step into the castle. There’s no wrong way to approach this, and you can take it at your own pace.

This guide walks you through the basics in a calm order: picking your house, how spells and combat work, getting around, gear, talents and the side systems worth knowing early. Grab a cozy drink and let’s get started.

What You’re Stepping Into

Hogwarts Legacy is an open world action RPG set in the 1800s, long before Harry Potter’s time. You play a new fifth year student who arrives late at Hogwarts and turns out to be able to see and use a rare kind of ancient magic.

It’s out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The basics below work the same on every version.

  • Checklist: choose your house.
  • Checklist: learn how spellcasting and dodging work.
  • Checklist: unlock Floo Flames for fast travel.
  • Checklist: keep your gear and talents up to date.
  • Checklist: explore, because exploration is where most of your XP comes from.

Your house decides your common room and one exclusive quest, not much else.

Step 1: Picking Your House

The Sorting Hat asks you a question and suggests a house based on your answer, but the final pick is yours. If the Hat suggests Ravenclaw and your heart says Hufflepuff, go with your heart.

  • What changes: your common room, your house colors on robes and gear, some dialogue, and one exclusive house quest.
  • What stays the same: the main story, spells, combat and the open world.
  • No wrong answer: pick the house that feels right, not the one a guide calls the best.

Lore Connection: each common room is built to match the house it belongs to, so it’s worth visiting yours early and having a look around.

Step 2: Spells and Combat Basics

Combat is a mix of casting, blocking and dodging. Spells don’t cost mana; each slotted spell has its own cooldown, so you rotate between them while Basic Cast fills the gaps.

  • Basic Cast: your always available attack. Chain hits for combos.
  • Protego: blocks attacks with a gold warning halo and can lead into a Stupefy counter.
  • Dodge: the answer to anything with a red halo, which can’t be blocked.
  • Spell sets: you start with one set of four spells, and the Spell Knowledge I, II and III talents add three more (16 spells total) that you can swap between on the fly.
  • Ancient Magic: a meter that fills as you fight and lets you unleash a big finishing attack.

Want somewhere safe to practice? Lucan Brattleby runs the Crossed Wands dueling club, and it’s a low pressure way to get comfortable before trolls and goblins show up.

Step 3: Getting Around

  • Floo Flames: fast travel points across the castle, Hogsmeade and the Highlands. Touch each one you pass so you can warp back later.
  • Brooms and mounts: the main quest Flying Class lets you buy your first broom at Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade, and flying mounts come later. They make the Highlands far quicker to cross.
  • The map: it tracks quests, dens, chests and collectibles as you discover them.

Step 4: Gear, Talents and Leveling

This is one of those moments worth slowing down for, because these systems quietly decide how strong you feel.

SystemHow it worksWhen it opens
GearSix slots with Offence and Defence stats; appearance can be changed freelyFrom the start
LevelingXP from quests, Field Guide pages and Challenges; cap is level 40After the Sorting
TalentsOne point per level from level 5, spread across five categoriesAfter the main quest Jackdaw’s Rest

Step 5: Side Systems Worth Knowing Early

  • Field Guide pages: cast Revelio often. It highlights pages, chests and puzzles, and every page gives XP. Some pages need a second spell, like Accio, Levioso or Incendio, to grab.
  • Plants and potions: plants grow in real time, so pot a few early and they’ll be ready when you need them.
  • Collection Chests: these hold cosmetic gear appearances and wand handles. Completionists, you’ll want to open every one.
  • Challenges: the Challenges menu tracks combat, exploration and collection goals, and finishing them is a big source of XP.
  • Restricted areas at night: some areas are off limits after dark, and sneaking around them can lead to extra secrets.

Good to know: side quests are not permanently missable, but many only appear after certain story milestones. If a quest giver seems quiet, come back after a few main quests.

Gentle Tips for New Students

  • Explore before you rush: chests and side activities are everywhere, and wandering is how you level.
  • Adjust the difficulty: you can change it any time from the settings with no penalty.
  • Check the vendors: shops in Hogsmeade sell recipes, seeds and gear, and buy your spare loot.
  • Keep inventory space: gear slots fill fast early on. Sell or destroy what you won’t use.
  • Take breaks in the castle: Hogwarts is full of small secrets. Some of the best moments are just walking around.

Hogwarts Legacy Beginner FAQ

Does your house matter in Hogwarts Legacy?

A little. It changes your common room, colors, some dialogue and one exclusive quest. The main story, spells and combat are the same for every house.

Do spells use mana in Hogwarts Legacy?

No. Each spell has a cooldown instead, and Basic Cast is always available.

How do you fast travel in Hogwarts Legacy?

Use Floo Flames. Touch each one you find, then pick it on the map to warp there.

When do you unlock talents?

After the main quest Jackdaw’s Rest. You earn one talent point per level from level 5 onward, and earlier points are granted retroactively.

What is the max level?

Level 40. Most of your XP comes from quests, Field Guide pages and Challenges rather than fighting.

Take Your Time: choose a house, practice a little, light some Floo Flames and let your curiosity lead you. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and Hogwarts rewards the students who linger.
