So here’s the deal: Treasure Vaults are the little stone hideaways scattered all over the Highlands in Hogwarts Legacy, and there are more than a hundred of them. Most hide a gear chest behind a puzzle, a lock or a fight (a few are simply open), and I’m not gonna lie, they’re the best excuse in the game to wander off the main path.

Look, I get it. A hundred plus vaults sounds like homework. But once you learn the handful of puzzle patterns the devs reuse, cracking them becomes one of the most relaxing loops in the game. Let me walk you through where they are, how the puzzles work and which spells you need.

How Many Treasure Vaults Are There?

Different guides land on different totals, from a little over 100 to around 112, depending on what each guide counts as a vault. The safe answer: well over a hundred, spread across every Highlands region.

The regions with big clusters are the open countryside ones: Feldcroft, Cragcroftshire, Hogwarts Valley, Marunweem Lake and the Clagmar Coast. Smaller pockets sit in South and North Hogwarts, Hogsmeade Valley, the Forbidden Forest, North Ford Bog, Manor Cape, the Poidsear Coast and the South Sea Bog.

Your in game map is the best tracker here. Open a region and its collectibles list shows what you’ve found, which beats any paper checklist. Our Hogwarts Legacy interactive map is handy for plotting a route before you fly out.

The Puzzle Types You’ll Run Into

When I first started hunting these, every vault felt unique. Then the patterns clicked. Most vaults fall into one of these types:

Puzzle typeWhat you seeSpells to use
Elemental cubeA magical cube with a spell symbol engraved on it, plus a marked platformAccio or Wingardium Leviosa to move it onto the platform, then cast the spell shown on the cube (Incendio, Glacius or Levioso, depending on the symbol)
Hidden entranceA cracked floor, a boarded gap or a pond with no obvious doorConfringo or Bombarda to break it open, or just dive in and swim
Out of reach handle or doorA handle or door visible through a gap or across waterAccio to pull it, Depulso to push it
Locked gateA lock symbol on the doorAlohomora at the right level
Guarded vaultEnemies camping the entranceYour normal combat loadout
Common Treasure Vault puzzles and how to solve them.

But here’s where it gets interesting: the engraved symbol on a cube is the answer key. If you see a fire icon, the vault wants fire. A snowflake means Glacius, and a levitation symbol means Levioso. The devs hid this in plain sight, and once you notice it, cube vaults go from head scratchers to thirty second jobs.

Spells to Unlock Before You Go

  • Accio and Wingardium Leviosa: for moving cubes into place. Wingardium Leviosa makes it far less fiddly.
  • Incendio and Confringo: for fire cubes and burning things away.
  • Accio and Depulso: for pulling handles and pushing doors. Several vaults accept either one.
  • Bombarda or Confringo: for breakable walls and floors.
  • Alohomora: for locked gates. Higher level locks need the upgraded spell from Gladwin Moon, who upgrades it in exchange for Demiguise Moons.
  • Glacius, Levioso, Reparo and Transformation: a handful of vaults use these for cube symbols, broken bridges and odd puzzle pieces, so keep a free slot.

Anyway, you can do vaults in any order. If one needs a spell you don’t have yet, mark it and come back later.

A Few Vaults to Start With

West Keenbridge (Hogwarts Valley)

Look for ruins west of Keenbridge and break the wooden floor to uncover a ladder. Down below, lift the cube over the pillars, light it up and set it on the platform. The pillar barrier drops and the chest is yours. It’s a perfect intro to how cube vaults think.

Central Feldcroft

Near an Ancient Magic hotspot, the cube sits in a nearby cart. Carry it to the trigger, cast Incendio on it and take the staircase down into the vault.

North Ford Bog Graveyard

This one’s a lock check. You need a strong enough Alohomora to open it, so if the prompt says no, upgrade the spell and come back.

Rewards: What’s Inside the Chests

Every vault ends in a gear chest. The piece inside comes with stats (offense or defense), and it also unlocks that look for your appearance collection, so you can wear the style while keeping the stats of something better.

  • Stat upgrades: early vault gear can beat what you’re wearing.
  • Wardrobe unlocks: hats, glasses, gloves, robes and more, which matters if you care about your look.
  • Gear traits later: once you unlock the Loom in the Room of Requirement, better gear lets you add traits on top.

Lore Deep Dive: I love how these feel like old wizard hideouts. A ladder under a rotten floor, a handle you can only reach through a crack in the rock… the worldbuilding here is next level. Someone built these to be found only by the curious.

Pro Tips for Vault Hunting

  • Clear one region at a time: then check the region’s list on your map so you never leave one behind.
  • Read the cube first: engraved symbol, then spell. Every time.
  • Look sideways: crevices, ponds and rivers often hide the real way in.
  • Stack collectibles: grab Demiguise Statues, Field Guide Pages and Merlin Trials on the same flight.
  • Bring combat spells: some vaults are guarded, so don’t show up with only puzzle spells equipped.

Treasure Vaults FAQ

How many Treasure Vaults are in Hogwarts Legacy?

More than 100. Guides count anywhere from just over 100 to about 112, so use your in game map’s region lists to track completion.

What spells do you need for Treasure Vaults?

Mainly Accio or Wingardium Leviosa, Incendio, Confringo, Glacius, Levioso, Depulso, Bombarda and Alohomora, plus Reparo and Transformation for a few.

How do you solve the cube puzzles?

Move the cube onto its platform and cast the spell engraved on it. Some cubes need to be lit before you place them.

What do Treasure Vaults give you?

A gear chest with a piece of clothing that has stats and also unlocks its appearance for your wardrobe.

Can you do Treasure Vaults in any order?

Yes. The only limits are which spells and Alohomora level you have unlocked, and whether the story has opened up that part of the Highlands yet.

The Payoff: start with the cube vaults near Hogwarts, learn the symbol trick and then fly out region by region. When I first cleared a full region, the map finally felt like mine. You’re not ready for how addicting this gets.
