Hogwarts Legacy hands you a whole wizarding world and then quietly trusts you to figure half of it out. That is part of the charm, honestly. But it also means a bunch of genuinely useful tricks slip right past you in the first ten hours.
No pressure, though. Let’s walk through this together: the systems the game barely explains, the menus worth checking, and the small habits that make exploring so much smoother.
Quick List: What the Game Barely Explains
| Secret | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Challenge rewards must be claimed | Cosmetic and gear rewards sit unclaimed until you collect them in the menu |
| You can skip to day or night | The Wait button on the map changes the time of day |
| Merlin Trials expand your inventory | Each milestone adds gear slots, but you have to claim it |
| Glowing objects want a spell | The game rarely says which, so try them all |
| Your House has an exclusive quest | Each House gets its own version of one main story quest the others never see |
| Transmog is free and reversible | Keep the stats you want with the look you like |
| Plants grow while you play | Skipping time does not speed them up |

Menus You Should Check More Often
Claim Your Challenge Rewards
Okay but, this one catches almost everyone. Completing a challenge in your Field Guide (combat, exploration, collection and more) unlocks rewards, often gear appearances. The game does not hand them over automatically. Open the Challenges tab now and then and claim everything waiting for you.
The Hidden Wait Button
Some quests and collectibles only work at a certain time of day. Demiguise Statues, for example, can only be collected at night. Open the map and look in the bottom right corner for the Wait option. It flips you from day to night or back again. Two small catches: you cannot pick an exact hour, and it does not work inside the Room of Requirement.
Transmog Your Gear
Love the stats on a robe but hate the look? From the Gear menu you can change any item’s appearance to one you have unlocked, and change it back whenever you like. Your favorite outfit never has to lose to a stat upgrade.
Exploring Smarter
Revelio Is Your Best Friend
Cast Revelio constantly. It highlights collectibles, Field Guide pages and objects you can interact with nearby. If you’re just starting out, make it a habit every time you walk into a new room.
When Something Glows, Try Every Spell
Statues, braziers, odd stone symbols and moving objects all react to spells, but the game rarely tells you which one. Go through your list: Incendio, Levioso, Accio, Depulso, Confringo and friends. If one does nothing, try the next.
Smash Everything
Crates, barrels and plenty of decorations break apart. Some hide items, some just make a satisfying crash. Either way, trust me on this, it is part of the fun.

Arithmancy Doors and Locked Doors
You will see Arithmancy Doors (the ones with creature symbols and numbers) soon after you reach Hogwarts. Each creature stands for a number, and you dial in the right symbols to open it. Locked doors with a padlock symbol need Alohomora, which you learn from Gladwin Moon, the castle caretaker, as you progress through the story.
Merlin Trials Pay Off Twice
Merlin Trials are the little stone circle puzzles all over the Highlands. You need Mallowsweet leaves to start them, and completing them unlocks gear inventory upgrades, which you claim yourself in Challenges, Exploration. Honestly? If you keep getting the “inventory full” message, this is your fix.
Small Habits That Save Time
- Keep Mallowsweet growing: you need a lot for Merlin Trials, so plant it early in the Room of Requirement and keep replanting.
- Plants grow in real time: they grow while you play, so go explore while they finish. Using Wait to skip to night will not speed them up.
- Vendors restock: sold out of something? Check back later and the shop refills.
- Your House matters: each House gets its own version of one main story quest (all four lead into Jackdaw’s Rest), so your choice is not just cosmetic.
- Gear upgrades: the Enchanted Loom in the Room of Requirement upgrades gear stats and applies traits (on Superb rarity and above), so a favorite piece can keep up.
- Swimming works: jump into water to swim across lakes and rivers. You cannot swim underwater freely, but you can dive at glowing whirlpool spots to pull up loot.
No Stress: you do not have to do all of this at once. Pick one habit, like casting Revelio more, and build from there.

Hogwarts Legacy Secrets FAQ
How do you change the time of day in Hogwarts Legacy?
Open the map and select Wait in the bottom right corner. It switches between day and night. It does not work in the Room of Requirement.
How do you increase inventory space in Hogwarts Legacy?
Complete Merlin Trials, then claim each inventory upgrade in Challenges, Exploration. Inventory starts at 20 slots and reaches the max of 40 after 52 trials.
Why didn’t I get my challenge rewards?
Challenge rewards must be claimed manually in the Challenges section of your Field Guide.
Can you change how your gear looks?
Yes. Use the transmog option in the Gear menu to swap an item’s appearance while keeping its stats.
The Payoff: claim your rewards, cast Revelio, keep the Mallowsweet growing and try a spell on anything that glows. Do that and the castle opens up so much faster. You’ve got this.
