Your Hogwarts Legacy adventure doesn’t start in a classroom. It starts with a dragon tearing your flying carriage apart somewhere over the Highlands.
New to the game? No stress. Here’s how to get through The Path to Hogwarts, the opening main quest, step by step, plus every spell it teaches you along the way.
The Path to Hogwarts at a Glance
- Quest type: the first main quest. It starts automatically after character creation and can’t be skipped.
- Key characters: Professor Eleazar Fig, George Osric of the Ministry of Magic, a goblin banker and Ranrok.
- Where it goes: a flying carriage, the Highlands coast and its ruins, then Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
- Spells you learn: Revelio, Lumos, Protego and Stupefy, on top of your Basic Cast.
- Next quest: Welcome to Hogwarts, where you finally reach the school.

Step by Step Walkthrough
Part 1: The Carriage and the Dragon
Step 1: Watch the opening. You’re riding to Hogwarts with Professor Fig with George Osric, who is already in the carriage with you. He shows you a newspaper about the goblin rebellion and hands Fig a container that only you can see glowing.
Step 2: Touch the container. Inside is a Portkey.
Step 3: Then the dragon hits. The carriage is torn apart, George is lost, and you grab the Portkey just in time. It whisks you and Fig away to the Highlands coast.
Part 2: The Highlands Ruins
Step 4: Fig hands you a Wiggenweld Potion, and you get control of your character. Follow him along the cliffs while he talks about ancient magic.
Step 5: At the enchanted ice wall, tap your Basic Cast until it shatters.
Step 6: Fig repairs a broken bridge with Reparo. Cross, interact with the statue and continue through the crumbled passage.
Step 7: Investigate the ruins and interact with the shimmering crystal surface, which turns into a doorway. The magic carries you straight into Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

Part 3: Gringotts and Vault 12
Step 8: A sleepy goblin banker leads you to Vault 12, then locks you in. Grab the chest on the right before you go in.
Step 9: Fig teaches you Revelio. Do the little spell mini game and cast it to reveal a hidden door.
Step 10: In the dark room beyond, interact with the glow on the floor. Cast Revelio to reveal a statue’s reflection, and Fig teaches you Lumos. Stand in front of the statue so it lines up with its reflection.
Step 11: The statue comes alive. You learn Protego: block its attacks three times without attacking first, then smash the Guardians with Basic Cast.
Step 12: Fig vanishes. Light the way with Lumos and follow the wisps to the next puzzle. Cast Revelio to reveal three statues, then stand where their three beams of light meet to activate them all at once.
Step 13: Another fight. You learn Stupefy as a counter: land it three times, then finish the group.
Step 14: Follow the wisp to a strange symbol, use the ancient magic there to open a portal and step through it. Fig rejoins you on the other side, and you view a Pensieve memory of an ancient wizard, Percival Rackham.
Step 15: Ranrok shows up to intimidate you both, and you escape. Quest complete, and the cliffhanger sets up the entire story.
Every Spell in the Prologue
| Spell | Where you learn it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Cast | The enchanted ice wall | Your core attack, also breaks magical barriers |
| Revelio | Vault 12 | Reveals hidden objects, doors and secrets |
| Lumos | The first statue puzzle | Lights up dark areas |
| Protego | The first Guardian attack | Blocks incoming attacks |
| Stupefy | The second fight | A counterattack that stuns enemies after a block |
| Reparo (Fig only) | The broken bridge | Fig repairs it here; you learn it yourself later at school |
(Pro tip: Revelio is the one you’ll use most for the rest of the game. Get in the habit of tapping it in every new room.)

What You Unlock
- Four spells: Revelio, Lumos, Protego and Stupefy, all yours for the rest of the game.
- Combat basics: block, counter, then punish. That loop carries you through every fight, all the way to the final boss.
- Story setup: the goblin rebellion, Ranrok, your rare ability to see ancient magic, and Percival Rackham’s memory.
Speaking of the final boss, when you get there, our Hogwarts Legacy hub has you covered from the first lesson to the last fight.
Pro Tips for the Prologue
- Stay close to Fig: he lights the way and drops useful hints.
- Learn the block timing: the Protego tutorial is short, but the timing matters in every fight later.
- Look for glows: a glow on the floor or a wisp in the air is always the next step.
- Relax: it’s hard to fail here. If a puzzle stumps you, cast Revelio again and look around.
- Grab chests: the prologue has a few, including the one outside Vault 12.
Oh, and once you’re at the school, the Hogwarts Legacy interactive map makes the castle much easier to learn. Still deciding whether to jump in at all? Read whether Hogwarts Legacy is still worth playing in 2026.
