So here’s the deal: most of Hogwarts Legacy has you chasing goblins and dark wizards, but one main quest just hands you a room of your own. The Room of Requirement is where you grow plants, brew potions, stash beasts later on and decorate to your heart’s content, and the quest that unlocks it is short, sweet and full of little details.
This guide covers how to start it, every step inside, what you get at the end and what the room turns into as the story moves on.
How to Start the Room of Requirement Quest
The Room of Requirement is a level 6 main quest from Professor Weasley, and it shows up a few hours into the story. You can’t miss it entirely, because the main story pushes you toward it, but you can absolutely get lost on the way.
- Where to go: the Astronomy Tower area of the castle. The Charms Classroom Floo Flame is a good place to fast travel to first.
- Finding the spot: press up on the D pad to use your Charmed Compass and follow the golden wisp trail to a glowing ring.
- Starting it: step into the ring and interact. A cutscene shows a door appearing in a blank wall, and Professor Weasley joins you to go inside.
When I first played this, I wandered the Astronomy Tower stairs for ages looking for a door that only exists once the quest starts. Trust the compass. And if you want to plan your Floo Flame stops, the Hogwarts Legacy interactive map shows the whole castle.

Room of Requirement Walkthrough
The quest itself is linear, so it’s mostly about knowing which spell to use where. Here’s the flow.
- Follow Professor Weasley inside. The room starts as a maze of piled up furniture and forgotten junk.
- Learn Evanesco. At the first barricade of stacked chairs she teaches you the Vanishing Spell. Trace the symbol, then cast it on the chairs. Vanishing objects like these also gives you Moonstone, which you’ll need very soon.
- Grab the crate chest. Further in, a crate sits out of reach. Pull it toward you with Accio, lift it with Levioso, then climb up to the higher ledge for a chest. Cast Revelio if you can’t spot the interaction points.
- Keep vanishing chairs. Clear the next piles, crouch through the gaps under the furniture and follow the path.
- Meet Deek. The house elf Deek is waiting at the end. A cutscene shows the room reshaping itself into a proper workspace.
- Use the Desk of Description. It identifies the unidentified gear in your inventory.
- Learn the Conjuring Spell. Talk to Professor Weasley to learn it by tracing its symbol.
- Conjure your first stations. Place a Potting Table and a Potions Station anywhere you like. That completes the quest.
Here’s Where It Gets Wild: that transformation cutscene is the payoff for all the chair clearing. One second you’re crawling through a dusty storeroom, the next the room is building itself around you. If you grew up with the books, it’s a genuine goosebumps moment.
Rewards at a Glance
| Reward | What it does |
|---|---|
| Evanesco | Vanishes objects. Clears clutter here and yields Moonstone. |
| Conjuring Spell | Places furniture and stations in the room using Moonstone and conjuration recipes. |
| Desk of Description | Identifies unidentified gear. |
| Potting Table and Potions Station | Your first crafting stations for plants and potions. |
| Interior Decorating | A follow up side quest from Professor Weasley that teaches the Altering Spell. |
Moonstone and Conjuring
Every piece of furniture you conjure costs Moonstone. You get some from vanishing clutter in the room, and you can find more out in the world or buy it in Hogsmeade. Spend it on extra Potting Tables and Potions Stations before decorative stuff, because those are what speed up your potion and plant supply.
What the Room Becomes Later
The Room of Requirement keeps growing as you play. The main quest The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom (again with Deek) adds the Nab-Sack for catching beasts, a Vivarium for keeping them and an Enchanted Loom for upgrading gear. After that, Deek’s own side quests open more Vivarium biomes.
- Interior Decorating: do this one early. The Altering Spell lets you change the size and look of what you’ve conjured.
- Fast travel: the room has its own Floo Flame, so it doubles as a base you can jump back to at any time.
- Conjuration recipes: new furniture designs come from challenges, collection chests (including the butterfly chests) and the spellcraft shelves at Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade, where Thomas Brown sells the bigger stations like the Potting Tables and Potion Stations.
Lore Deep Dive: The Come and Go Room
The devs hid this in plain sight. In the books, the Room of Requirement sits on the seventh floor, opens only when someone truly needs it, and turns into whatever they need. It’s also known as the Come and Go Room, and Harry finds a version of it stuffed with centuries of hidden junk.
That’s exactly the maze you walk through at the start of the quest. It’s the room in its Room of Hidden Things mode, right up until it decides that what you need is a workshop. The worldbuilding here is next level.
The game is still pulling a steady crowd on PC years after launch, as the live Hogwarts Legacy player count shows. If you’re just starting out, our take on whether Hogwarts Legacy is worth playing in 2026 is a good primer.
