Ever walked past a chest with a giant eyeball glaring at you and wondered why nothing you cast would open it? You’re not alone. Eye Chests are one of the castle’s quieter secrets: they are not part of the Collection Chest checklist, they do not show on your map, and they only open for a student nobody can see.
Here’s your checklist for every Eye Chest inside Hogwarts Castle, how to open them, and what you get. There’s no wrong way to work through it, so take it at your own pace.
What Eye Chests Are
An Eye Chest is a small chest with a large eyeball set into the lid. The eye tracks you as you move around the room. Walk up to it while you are visible and it watches you instead of opening.
- Spell needed: the Disillusionment Charm, which turns you invisible.
- Where you learn it: Sebastian Sallow teaches it during the main quest Secrets of the Restricted Section, so these chests stay locked until then. An Invisibility Potion also works if you’re short on time, but the charm is free and reusable.
- Reward: 500 Galleons in every Eye Chest.
- Map icon: none. Revelio highlights them when you are close, which is the best way to spot one.

How to Open an Eye Chest
Here’s your checklist:
- Step 1: Spot the chest from a distance. If the eye is looking at you, step back out of its line of sight.
- Step 2: Cast Disillusionment while it cannot see you. Crouching alone does not fool it.
- Step 3: Walk up while invisible and open it. Done.
- Step 4: If it spotted you first, walk away, wait out of sight for a little while, then try again from further back. If it still will not cooperate, leave the area and come back later.
(Pro tip: Back up further than feels necessary before you cast. Most failed attempts come from casting while the eye can still see you.)
All Eye Chests in Hogwarts Castle
The exact castle total is not settled: it runs from 10 to 15 depending on what you count, with possible extra chests in the Astronomy Classroom, the Clock Tower and the Faculty Tower. The ten below are confirmed, plus an eleventh that may sit at the underground boathouse dock. Every route starts at a Floo Flame, so fast travel first.
| # | Floo Flame | Where the chest is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hogwarts North Exit | In the courtyard, keep left and climb the stone stairs toward the wall; the chest is in the tower room at the top |
| 2 | Bell Tower Courtyard | Take the stairs on your left all the way up; chest at the end of a narrow corridor |
| 3 | Beasts Classroom | Climb toward the large door, but take the narrow passage beside it instead; chest at the end |
| 4 | Defence Against the Dark Arts Tower | Go down the stairs and follow the hall to its corner |
| 5 | Professor Fig’s Classroom | Through the door beside the flame, at the far end of the long room under the window |
| 6 | Map Chamber | Up the spiral staircase beside the flame; the chest is in the round room at the top, behind you |
| 7 | Lower Grand Staircase | Down the stairs, then up the stairs on the left; chest beside the big statue |
| 8 | Viaduct Courtyard | Up two flights of stairs, then along the narrow ledge by the wall to the end |
| 9 | Library Annex | Into the library, through the metal gate and down into the lower floor among the bookshelves |
| 10 | Greenhouses | Past the large tree, up the narrow staircase beside it to the end of the path |
| 11 (reported) | Viaduct Courtyard | Lift down to the underground dock; chest at the end of the left pier |
Missable! The Map Chamber chest needs some main story progress before you can reach the room, so if the spiral stairs are blocked, come back later.

A Route Through the Castle
You don’t have to do these in table order. Here’s a calm loop that keeps backtracking low:
- North side: North Exit, then Bell Tower Courtyard, then Beasts Classroom. Three chests in a few minutes.
- Centre: Lower Grand Staircase, Map Chamber, Professor Fig’s Classroom and the Defence Against the Dark Arts Tower.
- West and grounds: Library Annex, then the Greenhouses, and finish at the Viaduct Courtyard (plus the dock below if it is in your game).

Is It Worth It?
Completionists, you’ll want to know: ten chests at 500 Galleons each is 5,000 Galleons for about half an hour of gentle sneaking. That pays for a lot of early gear and potion ingredients. Hogsmeade has its own set of Eye Chests too, so the total across the game is a good bit higher.
Lore Connection: This random detail actually connects to the bigger story. The spell that opens these chests comes from the same night Sebastian sneaks you into the Restricted Section, so every Eye Chest you open is a small echo of that first rule you broke together.
Hogwarts Legacy still has a healthy crowd on PC, and you can check the live Hogwarts Legacy player count to see how many students are roaming the castle right now. Wondering if a return trip is worth it? Our take on whether Hogwarts Legacy is worth playing in 2026 covers that.
