A decades old disappearance, a woman locked in Azkaban for it, and a ghost who doesn’t know any of it happened. Prisoner of Love is the Hufflepuff house quest in Hogwarts Legacy, and it’s one of the moodiest stretches of the early story.
Here’s how to unlock it, every step from the common room portrait to the vault near Upper Hogsfield, and what it sets up next. Story spoilers are kept light where possible.

Prisoner of Love Walkthrough
Step 1: Read Your Owl Post
After The Trials of Merlin, a letter from Lenora Everleigh arrives saying a portrait in the Hufflepuff common room wants a word. Head down to the common room and follow your compass to Eldritch Diggory’s portrait.
Step 2: Speak to Eldritch Diggory
Eldritch has a cold case on his mind. A young man named Richard Jackdaw vanished years ago, and a young woman named Anne Thisbe was convicted of his murder. He believes the case is linked to the book you found in Secrets of the Restricted Section, and to its missing pages. He sends you to his great niece, Helen Thistlewood.
Step 3: Travel to Upper Hogsfield
Upper Hogsfield is a small hamlet northeast of Hogsmeade. Your best bet: fast travel to the nearest Hogsmeade Floo Flame, then run northeast along the path to the marker. (Pro tip: unlock the Upper Hogsfield area while you’re there, since several side quests send you back.)
Step 4: Talk to Helen Thistlewood
Helen tells you the story. Jackdaw went to meet Anne and never came back, and Anne was sent to Azkaban for life. Helen thinks Anne knows more than she ever said, and she offers to take you to see her.
Step 5: Visit Anne in Azkaban
Helen Apparates you both to Azkaban. Dementors swarm you on arrival, and Helen drives them off with her Patronus. Stay with her and follow her to Anne’s cell.
Anne isn’t well. Years in Azkaban have left her talking in rhymes and riddles, but the clue is in there: Jackdaw hid something in a vault in a cave near Upper Hogsfield. The conversation ends badly, and Helen gets you both out of there.
Step 6: Find What Jackdaw Left for Anne
Follow the marker to the vault in the cliffs north of Upper Hogsfield. Inside, stand on the central platform and cast Revelio. It highlights the handle blocks on the walls, six in total, three on each side. Pull each highlighted block with Accio, and the inner room opens.
Step 7: Read the Note and Leave the Vault
Jackdaw’s note asks Anne to meet him at the edge of the Forbidden Forest so he can show her a map he pieced together from pages Peeves tore out of the book. Head outside and you’ll meet Jackdaw’s ghost.
Step 8: Talk to Jackdaw’s Ghost
Jackdaw had no idea Anne was imprisoned. He wants to set things right and asks you to meet him at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, where he’ll show you where his remains, and the missing pages, ended up. That conversation completes the quest.

Quick Reference Table
| Objective | Where | What You Need |
|---|---|---|
| Speak to Eldritch Diggory | Hufflepuff common room | Trials of Merlin done, level 5 |
| Speak to Helen Thistlewood | Upper Hogsfield | Nothing |
| Speak to Anne | Azkaban | Follow Helen |
| Open Jackdaw’s vault | Cliffs north of Upper Hogsfield | Revelio and Accio |
| Speak to Jackdaw’s ghost | Outside the vault | Nothing |
What Comes Next
Jackdaw’s invitation leads into the main quest Jackdaw’s Rest, where you follow his ghost into the Forbidden Forest. That one has real combat, so restock potions before you go. Before Jackdaw’s Rest will start, though, you need Expelliarmus from Professor Hecat’s Assignment 2, so knock that out first.
Pro Tips
- No Combat Here: Prisoner of Love is all story, travel and one easy puzzle. It’s a nice break between combat heavy quests.
- Don’t Skip Anne’s Dialogue: Her riddles point you to the vault. The marker does the work, but the story lands better if you listen.
- Revelio First: If the vault seems empty, you haven’t cast Revelio yet. The handle blocks only stand out once it’s active.
- Grab Floo Flames on the Way: Upper Hogsfield comes up again later, so unlocking nearby fast travel now saves time.
