Want free skill points without paying a trainer or grinding for hours? Skill books are the answer, and Skyrim hides 90 of them across its holds. Every one permanently raises a skill by one point the moment you open it.

Let’s break it down: where these books hide, how to read them for maximum value, and which sample locations to check first. Quick beginner note: a skill book is not the same as a regular book on a shelf, because it glows slightly and gives you a real stat boost.

Skill Books Overview: What You’re Hunting For

The numbers tell an interesting story: there are 18 skills, and each one has five different skill books. That gives you 90 permanent upgrades in total.

  • Total Books: 90 skill books, five titles for each of the 18 skills.
  • Effect: +1 to the related skill, applied the instant you pick the book up.
  • No Level Cap: Unlike trainers, you can read as many skill books as you find at any character level.
  • One Read Per Title: Reading a second copy of the same book gives you nothing extra.
  • Theft Rules: Reading a book in someone’s home is not theft. Choosing to take an owned book while reading it is.

Lore Note: Skyrim’s books are full of in-world scholarship, from alchemy treatises to archery manuals. Reading them is part of how the Dragonborn picks up skills the way a real Tamrielic scholar would.

Skill Books vs. Trainers

Both give you quick skill gains, but they work very differently. Here’s how they compare:

FeatureSkill BooksTrainers

The big takeaway is that books never run out of daily or per-level slots. You can stack them with trainers for even faster progress.

Where to Find Skill Books: Step-by-Step

Here’s the step-by-step for hunting skill books efficiently. Since locations are spread across every hold, a little planning goes a long way.

  • Step 1: Pick one skill you actually use, such as Archery, Alchemy, or Alteration. Hunting for all 18 at once gets overwhelming fast.
  • Step 2: Check the shops, homes, and libraries in the major cities. Many books sit on shelves, tables, and behind counters in places you will visit anyway.
  • Step 3: Explore dungeons and ruins along your quest routes. Several books are on corpses or in side rooms.
  • Step 4: Walk up to the book and pick it up. You start reading it automatically and get the bonus right away.
  • Step 5: Leave duplicate copies alone, since a second copy of a title you’ve already read gives no bonus.

(Pro tip: if you want to save a book for later, ask a follower to take or steal it for you. That way you don’t trigger the automatic read.)

Alchemy Skill Books

Alchemy books turn up in shops, labs, and a few grim spots. Locations are approximate, so poke around the building or area.

  • Herbalist’s Guide to Skyrim: Look in alchemy shops like Arcadia’s Cauldron in Whiterun, Grave Concoctions in Falkreath, and Hag’s Cure in Markarth, plus the Winterhold alchemy lab.
  • Mannimarco, King of Worms: Check the corpse in Evergreen Grove, the alchemy lab in Nightcaller Temple, and a ritual site southwest of Solitude and east of Dragon Bridge.
  • Song of the Alchemists: Try the Bards College in Solitude and Kraldar’s House in Winterhold.

Lore Note: Mannimarco is the infamous necromancer known as the King of Worms. It fits that his book ends up beside corpses and ritual sites.

Alteration Skill Books

Alteration books lean toward ancient ruins and Markarth. Reality & Other Falsehoods is the title to look for, and its copies show up in some surprising places.

  • Reality & Other Falsehoods: Look for Orchendor’s corpse in Bthardamz and Krag’s corpse in Nchuand-Zel.
  • Daughter of the Niben: Check the room adjacent to the Jarl of Understone in Markarth.
  • Breathing Water, The Lunar Lorkhan and Sithis: the other three Alteration titles. They are scattered through dungeons and mage hangouts, so keep an eye out as you explore.

Archery Skill Books

Archery books are scattered across towns and camps. You’ll find them in places that match the theme: fletchers, hunting lodges, and warrior halls.

  • The Gold Ribbon of Merit: Check the Fletcher’s shop in Solitude.
  • The Marksmanship Lesson: Try the map room in Dawnstar Sanctuary, Gilfre’s House at Mixwater Mill, and Jorrvaskr’s private quarters, in the room with the showcased Elven bow and book.
  • Other Archery Spots: Look behind the counter at the Drunken Huntsman tavern in Whiterun and near a dead hunter in Autumnshade Clearing, northwest of Riften.

Quick beginner note: Jorrvaskr is the Companions’ mead hall in Whiterun. You can walk in during the day without joining the guild.

Rewards and Benefits

Skill books do more than add a point. Each new book also gives your skill enough experience to reach the next level, so you get a small bonus on top of the +1.

  • Free Skill Point: A permanent +1 to the skill, no gold required.
  • Experience Boost: Reading a new skill book awards enough experience to raise the skill to the next level.
  • XP Modifiers: Standing stone effects and other XP modifiers increase the experience you get from skill books, just as they do with trainers.
  • Stacking Potential: With the right combination of bonuses, you can earn more than two levels’ worth of XP from one book. You still can’t level a skill up three times from a single book.

The numbers tell an interesting story here: the experience reward is the same no matter when you read, but the effort saved is much bigger at high skill levels. Going from level 15 to 16 is quick, while going from 85 to 86 takes much longer.

Pro Tips

  • Save Books for Later: It’s generally more efficient to read skill books when your skill is already fairly high. That’s when the time and effort you’d otherwise spend leveling is much greater.
  • Avoid Wasting XP: Skip reading a book when your skill is about to level up on its own. You’ll get the most experience from it right after a level-up.
  • Use a Follower: Have your follower carry a book for you so you can read it at the perfect moment.
  • Check Every Shelf: Skill books sit right next to ordinary books, so scan each shelf slowly.
  • Track Your Progress: A printable checklist helps, and the community has made handy ones that list every book in the game.
  • Mind the Bugs: If a skill seems to level oddly after a book, check the community notes on known bugs.

(Pro tip: if you want to go all in on a single skill, line up your standing stone and rested bonuses first. Done near level 85, careful stacking can nearly max out a skill after just five books.)

Why Skill Books Matter

Skill books reward curiosity. They give you a good reason to explore every corner of Skyrim, from Markarth’s cramped halls to forgotten Dwemer ruins.

They also let you shape your character without spending gold or hitting a per-level cap. Collect all five for a skill, and you’ve gained five free levels’ worth of progress.

So which skill are you hunting first? Tell us in the comments which book was the hardest to find, and we’ll help you track down the rest!
